Water treatment and storage

Water treatment is an important source of water supply for varying needs that require considerable volume of water. Water is treated in plants to be freed from contaminants and is stored in tanks to be discharged back to the environment for a number of uses.
Waste water treatment systems enable reuse of waste water after treating it chemically and making it suitable for use back again in the environment. Waste water refers to water that is formed from a number of activities like bathing and washing. The surplus of rainwater is also considered as waste water. No matter from where the water comes, it is full of chemicals, bacteria and other impurities. Proper treatment of the waste water reduces the level of contamination to considerable extents that is considered safe for reuse. This water can be used for all types of purposes like agriculture, fire suppression, irrigation, households work, chemical manufacturing and medical needs.

The water that is treated in plants is stored in tanks. There are underground water tanks and elevated water tanks. The water tanks underground are made up of carbon steel that stores a large volume of water that can be easily used at the time of peak demand.
Elevated water tanks are better known as water towers. The higher elevation of these tanks creates sufficient discharge pressure that is ideal for domestic or commercial and industrial requirements.

Rain water tanks are used for collecting and storing rain water runoff from rooftops via trenches and drains. Due to scarcity of water in some areas, people are encouraged to use rainwater harvesting tanks to make water available at the time of serious requirement. Rainwater tanks are perceived to have a high initial cost. However, there are small rain barrels that facilitate storage and are less expensive.

The purpose of installing rainwater tanks is to make adequate use of surplus rain water which otherwise would have been a total waste. The rainwater can be effectively used in watering plants, washing vehicles, washing clothes, flushing toilets and in agriculture. When consistent water supply is a difficult thing in most areas today, rainwater surplus serves as a great relief; a little effort results in a big advantage.

There are concrete water tanks also that are widely used in rural situations. They vary in sizes depending upon the needs. These tanks are considerably used in urban areas also where they are placed underground. Concrete tanks are suitable in areas that have high risks of fire damage. These tanks offer higher resistance and have better durability when compared to plastic and steel tanks. This is why they are used for both domestic and commercial purposes and by builders and developers for construction purposes. These tanks can also be used as water tanks underground.

The choice for water storage should practical. It depends upon the area where it is to be used and the purpose for which the water is to be stored. This helps in determining the texture and size of the water tanks.

The objective of waste water treatment systems is to maintain water supply from waste water without posing any damage to the natural environment and so storage of water is important.
