Quentin Dupieux’s Rubber isn’t as much about the shocking killing spree a tyre sets itself on, after discovering his destructive telepathic powers, as it is about the very inanimate fact that the tyre could possess a life in the very first place! It has, at least, in this horror film, even if a tyre cannot in the real life.
The tyre has got a name, too. He is named, Robert. If it had not been for his name and gracious moves, he would have been referred to as ‘it’ and not ‘he’. It is not known if, in the near future, with the world becoming so uncertain these days, a tyre would be able to do, what Robert does or not, but one thing is for sure: Quentin has really stretched his mind – as far as the rubber could let him stretch it – and conjured ‘a difficult story’. It is not difficult to watch Rubber online though!
Robert has been abandoned in the desert and how unfortunate for someone who did! It’s in the desert that he inexplicably comes to life. It would have been too hackneyed had the ‘coming to life’ not brought with it a discovery that Robert possesses telepathic powers! The moment he discovers that he has startling powers, he goes ballistic.
The feeling is quirky, yet extremely believable, if you watch it from the eyes of Robert. Rubber sets itself apart from all those defining horrifying thrillers that horrify us! Here, Robert’s exercise makes us consider his feeling, thereby making us look at him as a human figure, charged with same excitement and perplexity a human would generate on coming across such discoveries. If you find the story nonsensical, it will be because Quentin always wanted it to be nonsensical, lending a truly original tribute to the cinematic concept of ‘no reason’. The films should not be made out of simple reason. If ‘the reason’ is a required ingredient, why there are so many cult films that became cult as years progressed but were discarded initially? What is the reason behind that? ‘No reason’ – and that is exactly what Quentin tries to do here!
Nor should you look for any reason to download Rubber Movie! Yes, you can find several reasons – the high-speed, the virus-free links, permanent access to the film – but choose one that suits you! Just like the one Robert chose – the beautiful and mysterious woman who crosses his path! The journey that he initially embarks on by preying on small desert creatures soon shifts to humans, turning the whole desert landscape totally annihilated.
