There are many uses to which ostrich feathers can be put, but when it comes to comparing birds feathers, there is no doubt that the ostrich feather reigns supreme.
Birds of a feather

Birds of a feather that do not fly together are called ostriches. One of the great tools of survival for all birds is the ability to fly; although the ostrich feather is remarkable in its engineering, ostriches use their feathers to protect their bodies from the elements rather than for flight. It is the lack of ability to fly that has ensured the survival of ostriches which can be as easily farmed as cattle. Today, most ostrich feather boas are created from feathers that come not from wild ostriches but from ostriches that have never seen a lion in the wild. Of course, in the wild, ostriches are perfectly designed for avoiding being eaten by lions as their long legs and long necks enable them to see lions approaching from miles away. In fact, it is very difficult for a lion to catch an ostrich as ostriches can easily out run a lion. However, the most dangerous predator for an ostrich is man; not necessarily the sniper rifle but, the loss of the birds’ natural habitat to farming.

Concern for the preservation of bird species is usually at the forefront of buying decisions with most if not all companies that buy in ostrich feathers. There are many different types of ostrich plumage, which is why the ostrich is so popular with fashion designers. In fact, florists are also grateful to the planet’s largest bird as there are some ostrich plumes that are so long and dramatic, that they perfectly complement the finest floral displays. Whatever type of fashion accessory you may wish to buy there is no doubt that an ostrich fringe offers a great deal of opportunity for design.

Ostriches can be eaten, their skins turned into luxury leather goods and their plumage into a multitude of fashion and design accessories. The ostrich fringe is always highly desired but there are many other birds’ feathers from which to choose including the stunning goose coquille fringe, the pheasant fringe, the coque fringe, the turkey fringe, the chinchilla fringe, the goose fringe, and the bird of paradise fringe although, unlike other birds, birds of paradise are protected and so their fringes and boas are entirely manufactured.

Fringes that are made from the plumes of ostriches are usually two-ply and can be dyed into many and varied colours. Sometimes, for large orders, feathers can be dyed into a bespoke colour. Regular, dyed plumes come in various shades of brown, coral, pink, gold, grey, cerise, apricot, yellow, blue and a plethora of other colours and shades.

Theatre is one area where the coating on birds and the tools that give them flight and warmth are relished and shows in the West End of London that utilise ostrich plumes include the ultra camp, ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ and the ultra successful ‘Les Miserables’.

Ostriches can provide feathered specimens that are up to 25” in length but they also have wonderful down which is surprisingly soft.
