Great horses have always made a mark, despite endless challenges tossed at them or opportunities taken away. Time and again, the racing history has been adorned with astonishing performances and exhibits of greatness in speed, stamina, enthusiasm and determination that have been noted down in the books for eternity. When Secretariat was born in 1970, the chestnut colt reminded the world of Man O’War; birth of Easy Goer in 1986, sired by Alydar, became the reminiscence of Secretariat himself, the Big Red.

Easy Goer, the Alydar colt was born out of Relaxing, a 1981 champion filly from the world number 14, Buckpasser. Easy’s presence may not have been vindicated well enough but he had the most generous pedigree that made him the king of long distances. The record breaking stalker had a brief racing career followed by not more than 3 crops of foal before meeting an abrupt end.

Easy Goer was prized and blessed in every possible fashion, he was sired by the reputed Ogden Phipps, one of the veterans of horse racing; gifted with a pedigree to die for; and ridden for his entire career by the record champion Pat Day.

Despite endless graded stakes wins, Easy Goer’s most memorable racing episode was his never-ending rivalry with Sunday Silence that didn’t start until their sophomore and ended only after sustained injuries in their four year old season. As a two year old colt, Easy’s favourite wins were the grade 1 races, Cowdin Stakes, Champagne Stakes and a second place finish in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile. The latter would have never been an Is It True’s victory with Easy Goer on the racing track, had it not been for the muddy track; Easy detested the sloppy mud, it was his only weakness if that is how it should be referred.

The Alydar colt was doing fabulous going the instant favourite for the Triple Crown Derby. Easy had already demolished a handful of graded stakes; Wood Memorial, Whitney and Travers, on the way to the Derby. During the Gotham Stakes, Easy Goer almost broke the track record set by Dr.Fager running the dirt’s second fastest mile at 1:32 2/5, a fifth of a second slower. The graded stakes front was truly captured making him the only horse in the history to have won the Travers, Woodward, Whitney and Jockey Club Gold Cup stakes. However, the Triple Crown eluded him as he denied the crown to Sunday Silence.

During the Derby, Churchill Downs experience rains and the track turned absolutely contrary to what Easy Goer would have preferred. The slop worked its wonders and Sunday Silence neatly defeated the red colt to a 2 ½ lengths. Despite the loss, Easy Goer went as the favourite for the Preakness. The race tracks witnessed another speed duel reminiscent of great rivalries like Alydar-Affirmed, Dr.Fager-Damascus and many more; but eventually Sunday Silence won the race by a nose. A rematch was now undeniable.

The Easy Goer- Sunday Silence rivalry took another leap forward as they met on the Belmont Park for the final leg of the Triple Crown. Today, Sunday Silence went as the final favourite. The preferences were opposite to that of the previous two legs of the Triple Crown, but then, so were the consequences. Easy Goer ran the fastest ever creating a lead of 8 lengths and winning the race second fastest to the great Secretariat. The rivalry had been avenged until the Breeder’s made a comeback. The two were destined to meet yet again, the classics it was.

Easy Goer may have been in a fabulous shape but things did not go quite as planned in the Classic finals. Despite the fact that Easy Goer gave Sunday Silence a heavy run for his money, the former ended a neck short of the race winner; Easy Goer was forced to relinquish his position to Sunday Silence who was awarded the Eclipse Award for Champion Three Year Old Horse for the year.

Following a brief racing career as a four year old, both the rivals were retired to stud. Easy Goer sired almost three crops of foal before an untimely death caused due to anaphylactic shock, he was only eight. Some believe it must have been a blessing in disguise as his necropsy reports showed he was suffering from a more silent and deadly form of cancer that could have killed him anyway.

Easy Goer and his rivalry are one of the best horse racing rivalries known to fans and probably the most preferred for many racing enthusiasts who’d like Easy Goer’s capabilities vindicated. horseracegame.com brings to life many memorable racing episodes for all its followers through horse games.
