Villas and other tourist attractions in Mandelieu-La Napoule

Mandelieu-La Napoule is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France, located on the French Riviera just to the southwest of Cannes and northeast of Théoule-sur-Mer.

Mandelieu La Napoule is just to the west of Cannes on the Mediterranean coast. It is a mere 3 miles from the beach of Cannes but has a very different atmosphere, and, crucially for the golfer, it has two very different golf courses within the commune whilst Cannes for all its other advantages has none.

The two courses are The Old Course at Mandelieu and Riviera Golf Club.
The Old Course as its name suggests has been around a little longer and is a very attractive proposition on first look. Very green, a colour emphasised by the parasol pines which line most fairways. These have suffered some disease in recent years which has detracted slightly from the beauty of the course but they have worked very hard to mitigate the effects and now it is hardly noticeable.

The greens are very good, but my beef with this course is that if you are slightly wayward, the pines stop and drop the ball, almost always making the second shot much longer than it would otherwise be. However the opposite viewpoint, proffered by better golfers than I is to keep the ball straight!

Situated very close to the sea, the course spreads both sides of the Siagne River which disgorges into the Mediterranean nearby. That necessitates a trip across the river and back to play some of the later holes. It is a charming and quirky arrangement to take your clubs on a boat for a 1 minute river crossing. This is a challenging course which will test most golfers except perhaps, paradoxically those that do not hit it too far.

Riviera Golf Course, just on the northern edge of Mandelieu La Napoule is a very different proposition. It is very English in style with space on some holes to spray it around. It was the victim of a forest fire a couple of years ago, but you would hardly know it. In fact the course itself was largely unaffected but the surrounding countryside was badly scorched. Much money is being spent here so a good course will become better. It has a very nice Terrace and a nice fountain on the lake which provides some water hazards on the way around.

A good week would be to play these courses and perhaps add another such as St Donat about 10 miles north of Mandelieu La Napoule. Ideally, renting a villa in or near Mandelieu La Napoule or just outside would be a perfect base from which to reach these courses. This can be done quite easily as there are a number of villas available to rent all year around and a number of rental companies who will be able to find you the perfect place.

If accompanied by wives, the shopping of Cannes is very easily reachable; there is a train that goes from Mandelieu direct to the centre of Cannes, which enables you to keep the car! However with all the designer stores in Cannes such as Dior, Chanel, Gucci and the like, it could be a bit expensive, better to tell the girls to look at Rue d'Antibes, where there are a number of nice shops with more reasonable prices.

There are also the beach restaurants of Cannes to sample on the days you don't play golf, or to send the wives out to enjoy, meaning a little more time can be spent at the 19th hole.

Mandelieu has a slightly sleepy air, but it has some nice restaurants to sample. During summer I favour La Sweet because it is right on the sand and the food is very good especially their giant salads and fish, but the town itself has an eclectic mix of restaurants that I must try one day. Nice airport is just 25 minutes drive and with flights from most UK destinations daily, this is a good bet for a week’s golf and seaside holiday.
