Kerala, fondly called God’s own country, is a region situated on the Malabar coast of south-west India. Kerala is a narrow strip of coastal territory that slopes down the Western Ghats in a cascade of lush green vegetation and reaches to the Arabian Sea. Blessed with pristine beaches, mist shrouded hill stations, placid backwaters, clement weather and vibrant and varied culture, Kerala is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India.

Kerala is renowned for its beaches, backwaters and hill stations. There are also a lot of heritage sites to be visited. Kerala Tour Operators have devised attractive packages showcasing the state.

More prominent beaches in Kerala Tourism Map are Kovalam, Cherai, Varkala, Kappad, Muzhappilangad and Bekal. Of these Kovalam is frequented more oft. Kovalam is situated in the southern part of Kerala, thirteen kilometers away from Trivandrum. Kovalam is easily accessible through road. This accessibility makes it popular among locals also. Other endearing quality that makes it the darling of tourists is that it has not lost its pristine nature despite being highly commercialized and crowded. Kovalam is formed of three crescent shaped beaches. It was discovered by Travancore kings and is one of the oldest known tourism spots of India. Kovalam shot into limelight when in ninety seventies hippies swarmed to this place. The sea here is shallow and safe for swimming. White sandy beaches invite temptingly to soak the sun lying on them. There are many hotels and resorts which offer world class facilities and service. In addition to that most of them are located in beach vicinity enabling the tourists to stay in the ambience throughout.

The more important hill stations are Munnar, Wayanad, Wagamon, Peermade, Nelliampathi and Ponmudi. Munnar is the most important of the lot. This gorgeous paradise is situated about one thousand and six hundred meters high, near the confluence of three rivers. Blessed with exotic flora and fauna, adorned with green carpet of manicured tea gardens, home to cascading waterfalls and gushing brooks and decorated by colonial bungalows, Munnar is an ideal destination for trekking and mountain biking. Some places of notable worth nearby to Munnar are Eravikulam National park, Anamudi Peak, Mattupetty, Pallivasal, Chinnakanal, Anayirangal, Rajamalai, Echo Point, Top station, Tea Museum etc. In Eravikulam National Park, an endangered species – Nilgiri Tahrs are found in its last zone of survival.

Any Kerala tour will be incomplete without tasting its Backwaters. Backwaters is an unique Kerala phenomenon. It is a complex labyrinth of manmade and natural canals and inlets, estuaries of over forty rivers and five lakes. The Backwaters make for breathtaking landscape with shores lined with abodes, verdant flora, swaying coconut trees, lush green paddy fields and various activities of life; and backwaters adorned with water flowers especially water lilies. Cruises along Backwaters can be had in Kochi, Alleppey and Kollam.

Houseboats are the latest buzzword in Backwater tourism. Houseboats are modern day versions of “Kettuvallams” of yesteryears. “Kettuvallams” were used to transport rice and house hold items through Backwaters. They had thatched roof over wooden hulls to offer protection from elements of nature. Although the shape remains same Houseboats come as two to three storied affairs with one to five bedrooms. Apart from sleeping space, there is a dining space and sit out open on all sides, letting tourists savor the landscape.
