With the intention to understand the concept of Vedic math, it is important to abreast history of the notion. Concept of Vedic mathematic was introduced by a Hindu scholar and mathematician Bharti Krishna Tirthaji Maharaja in early 20th century. It is a system that consist a list of sixteen basic principles called the 'sutras’ that help in quick calculations. Tirthaji derive these principles after doing an intense study of Vedas. (The sacred ancient Hindu text)

The Hindi word Veda means knowledge, since, the ancient religious books of Hindus are considered rich source of knowledge they are also referred as Vedas. Though these Vedas do not directly offer the principles of Vedic calculation, these principles are based on central core of the text.

The study of ancient math is once again in the spot light, due to the changed brought on in the education and career prospects. In country like India, engineering is the decided choice of career for most children. So, a hard fight to get into engineering colleges begins at an early stage. The children are ruthlessly forced to score good marks in the subject and are asked to strengthen their hold on math. Students go for tuitions, do a lot of study and other things to crack entrance exams of top engineering institutes.

Hundreds of academies prepare thousands of students every year for the prestigious Joint Engineering entrance exam, AIEEE and IIT in India. Data states out of 150,000 candidates that take these entrance exams every year only some make through the top institutes, certainly because it takes a lot more than good grades and good calculations to beat the exams. One of the Vedic calculation teachers, teaching in Delhi, says with the increase in number of students interested in IIT institutes, popularity of Vedic math is also increasing. Apparently, this is why academies charge as much as $120 for 40 hours Vedic math classes.

Interestingly coaching centers in India are multimillion-dollar business now. However, the count of successful students, making their career big remains low, this is so only because the applicant look for something more, they look for an aptitude. This is the main reason that brought back the ancient source of Vedic calculation into the picture. Vedic calculation helps students in developing quick problem-solving ability that becomes the most crucial link between objective and achieving those objectives.

The 16 brief formulas in Sanskrit that have been derived from Vedas are interpreted and taught in Vedic math classes. With the logical insight and reasoning that is developed by the teachers in students, lengthy and tedious calculations also become easy for students. For e.g. calculating the square of a number becomes easy for students practicing Vedic mathematic.
