When you not only have a household to move but have a variety of pets and several children around then the household move may become chaotic. When you have the moving firm come out to give you an estimate also let them know you have pets and children so they are prepared on moving day and will be careful not to leave doors open to let pets or children escape.

No one ever gets used to a move. It is a period of great stress for everyone in the household, including the dog or cat or other pets. In fact as you get closer to the moving date, you might want to consider putting the family pets in a friendly kennel so they are not as stressed as you are because animals do pick up their owners moods and feelings like stress. Besides, having a pet in the home during a move may result in that pet being scared and running out an open door. Of course if you have parrots or other animals in containers or cages then you should make sure they are well contained on moving day so they don’t escape either. The best thing to do is ask a neighbor or relative to take care of them for you until you are moved.

A moving firm will not take live pets in their van so you will also have to figure out a way to get them moved. A moving firm will not take live plants either so you will have to make arrangements for these to be moved also. A moving company cannot take responsibility for keeping pets or plants alive during a move.

When you have small children they too will pick up your stress or they may be unhappy to leave their school or friends so you will have to figure out a way to either involve them in the move or make sure they have family to stay with until the move is complete.

Also remember that small children are curious and they will explore the unknown so if you are packing with them around make sure you watch them as you may find they are helping you move. If they are watching you put items into a box they may think they are helping if they too add some items to boxes but perhaps with no protection around them. So if you want to involve them in the move take the time to show them how to pack. Perhaps have them pack up their toys. Children like to copy their parents so have them watch you then let them do it themselves.

Make sure small children are not under foot when the movers arrive because if they get in the way someone may get hurt. Children don’t always understand they can get hurt. A moving dolly loaded with heavy boxes can tumble and land on a child’s foot. That would certainly hurt and this is dangerous to everyone involved in the move.
