In a unique move on the 2010 Oscar night, one man by the name of Ric O’Barry held up a sign with a call-to-action for viewers. The sign read “Text DOLPHIN to 44144” and the man managed to get a few seconds of free media even as the camera cut away relatively quickly. The SMS message inspired a large number of text message service messages to come in, carrying funds to the campaign to save dolphins, proving to SMS service providers that inspired efforts can cause messages to go quickly viral in seconds.
The message displayed during the acceptance speech for the winning Best Documentary. Ric O’Barry, who captured and trained the first five dolphins who later played Flipper in the popular 1960s television series, has devoted his life to protecting and releasing dolphins from captivity. His involvement in the capture and training of the dolphins prompted his devotion after he witnessed the ramifications of his work on the dolphins. One of the Flipper dolphins died in his service, reportedly in O’Barry’s arms.
O’Barry’s life work, recorded in the winning documentary called The Cove, and the unique SMS campaign advertisement method inspired a hefty response. Traffic to the SMS gateway provider reportedly spiked almost immediately and then held steady for five hours after the sign appear at the Oscars. New SMS subscribers were still coming in relatively steadily for days after and signing the petition in addition to sending multiple SMS contributions.
In a unique SMS provider implementation aimed at giving U.S. home buyers a new way to get drive-by information about real estate, real estate agents are now including an SMS message on the signs displayed outsides home that are for sale. Real estate signs may now include a text message that the potential home buyer can send through bulk SMS messaging services to get information about the home or be contacted later by the real estate agent.
Some of the details that may be sent back through bulk SMS software include the number of bedrooms in the home, the number of bathrooms, the price, HVAC options, and even pictures along with the real estate agent’s direct contact information. The SMS providers have come up with a unique way to connect the real estate agent with potential home buyers – all without the buyer ever having to leave their car! In a uniquely environmentally friendly method of information distribution, the buyer now has the information they need to decide whether to contact the real estate agent or not as well. Plus, if the initial sender of the message happens to be interested for another person, all they have to do is forward the SMS message response to the other person. Again, no paper required.
With the latest advancements in technology and the near-ubiquity of mobile devices, this useful integration of technology and usability is sure to reach a far greater number of potential home buyers through word of mouth and highly effective organic advertising.
