Bathroom sealant can be used to finish off bathrooms and help to prevent mould and mildew from forming. This can be one of the main problems with bathroom area. As well as looking and smelling unpleasant many people are also allergic to mould and mildew. This can cause problems such as coughing, wheezing and sore eyes.
Why Does Mildew Form in Bathrooms?
Bathrooms are naturally damp environments. Showers, baths and sinks all contribute to bringing water into the bathroom. In most cases this water will simply dry away, but when it seeps into unused areas such as behind baths and sinks it can create damp environments. These are the perfect breeding grounds for mould and mildew and because they are difficult to reach you may not even realise you have a problem.
How Can Bathroom Sealant Help?
Bathroom sealant can be used to seal key areas around the bath and sink. This will block gaps and prevent the water from seeping into unused areas. Bathrooms sealant will help to direct water down the drain when you are having a shower or bath and prevent damp areas from forming. Bathroom sealant also has fungicide chemicals to prevent the mould from forming on the surface.
Using Bathroom Sealant
Bathroom sealant is very easy to use and you can choose from flexible caulking and silicone sealant. Both of these products can work to seal gaps between your bath/sink and the wall. Flexible caulking is more suitable for larger gaps but is not quite as durable as silicone sealant. Silicone sealant is available in cans and you simple apply a small bead along the gap and then smooth it out. This will then dry quickly and form a durable seal between your bath and the wall. It is important not to use too much silicone sealant as not only is this a waste but it will also cause a bumpy, uneven finish. Silicone sealant cans will come with their own applicators, or you can use them in a special applicator gun. Both methods are easy to use but the gun applicator does provide a bit more control which should make it even quicker and easier to use bathroom sealant.
Before you use bathroom sealants you do need to thoroughly dry the two surfaces you are working with. Silicone sealant and flexible caulking repels water. If you try and apply these products on a wet surface they will not stick. Oil and dirt will also prevent bathroom sealant from sticking effectively so it is a good idea to clean the two surfaces as well before you apply these products.
Bathroom sealant will effectively stick to many non-porous surfaces including ceramic tiles and porcelain. It can become discoloured over time and if it cracks it could enable mould to penetrate the sealant. You should replace bathrooms sealant every few years to ensure the gap remains waterproof. You can do this by simply using a sharp tool to cut away the existing sealant. Then clean and dry the area and apply a new layer of flexible caulking or sealant.
