If poetry is believed to be a barometer of the health for a language, Urdu is probably the healthiest of all. Unlike other languages, poetry was developed even before prose could b developed. Legends like Mirza Ghalib, Allama Iqbal, and Mir Taki Mir have contributed to the language with their soul stirring couplets (also called Shayari) and ghazals.
The most popular among the different types of Sher-o-Shayri is undoubtedly, the Ghazal. Ghazals were originally written as an ode to the beloved describing her beauty. However, they are no longer classified under the genre of romance and cover a variety of different subjects like religion, society etc. These ghazals have a minimum of five and a maximum of 25 verses. Although they make sense when read together, each of these verses have a meaning of its own. The entire ghazal usually rhymes throughout the verse.
Besides, ghazals, Masnavis too are a favorite. These may extend to a thousand lines and usually deal with poetic romances, although a few may include other occurrences. A shayri on the other hand is couplet that has two verses. It’s also known as bait or Sher. Besides these, other forms of Urdu poetry include, Nazm, Hamd, and Hazal etc.
Lovers of Urdu, in ancient times expressed their Shayaris through mushairas, or conventions where poets gathered and rendered their works. Earlier these mushairas were based on a common theme with the theme being already given to the poet. However, mushairas that are held today do not share a common theme, but poets come and recite poems in a style that’s preferred by them. The theme could vary from bawdy humor to soul stirring verses.
Mushairas are however losing their charm and popularity, as a number of youngsters preferring to share their love for Sher-o-Shayari and Kahani Urdu through a number of chat rooms rather having to discuss these at Mushairas. A number of Pakistani chat rooms host forums where people pen their thoughts and discuss their thoughts and ideas about the language. These forums are also popular as youngsters get to share sad shayri, love shayri, shayri SMS, shayri on dosti and greeting cards. Almost ever topic under the sun is discussed in the forums. These forums provide an opportunity to likeminded Pakistanis to share their thoughts and ideas in a healthy manner.
These chat rooms are popular among the Indians as well, who visit these forums to showcase their talents. Online mushairas are often held in these chat rooms, where lovers of Urdu gather for a soul stirring evening.
