The Advantages And Disadvantages Of An Unlocked Motorola Droid Phone
The prospect of an unlocked Motorola phone might seem a little odd. Android OS is supposed to be open source, isn’t it? While Android is a much more open platform than Apple’s iPhone OS, users still aren’t given all of the privileges. This results in what some might consider limited functionality. There are some things an unlocked Droid phone can do that an ordinary Droid phone cannot. These features might be worth it if you are willing to spend a lot of extra time digging into the guts of your phone while risking the chance that you might accidentally turn your Droid into a brick.
We won’t lecture you on the obvious concerns we have with any plan to unlock a mobile device like the Droid. We figure you already know enough about it. Instead of doing that, we want to present you with some of the features you will gain from unlocked cell phones. Knowing what these are, you can decide whether it is worth it or not.
1.) Multitouch and gesture based controls
The Motorola Milestone already has it. Why shouldn’t you? Unlocking will allow you to add these highly intuitive controls to your Droid, making all of your friends with ordinary Droid phones jealous. A multitouch UI lets you to pinch and zoom, rotate, and do whatever else you can get your grubby fingers on. A word of caution, though. The Droid isn’t exactly optimized for multitouch, so a multitouch implementation on the device might be a little clunky.
2.) Customizeable user interface
A lot of people complain that their smartphone, whether it’s an iPhone, a Droid, or anything else, simply doesn’t give them all that many customization options. When you unlock a Droid, you can download custom themes or even make your own. It’s an artsy way to express your inner geek.
3.) Internet tethering
Do you want to use that 3G connection to access the web on your laptop? No problem. Tethering turns your Motorola Droid into a modem that you can then access via Bluetooth. This is pretty nice if you don’t want to purchase a separate 3G data plan for your laptop while you’re on the go. This is arguably the strongest reason you would want to unlock a Droid. It could save you money if you’re willing to risk a little and invest the time.
Some people need to control everything. If you’re one of them, you might want to consider unlocking your Droid phone. Undoubtedly, if enough people want a new feature, it will be included in some future OS release. Just give it time and enjoy your phone without giving yourself any headaches. The Droid is an awesome device, unlocked or not.
