Only certain stones work well with a leathered finish. Usually, "harder" stones such as granites and quartzites but some marbles are also suitable. This finish occurs at the supplier's factory when they are either honing or polishing the slabs. A leather surface is textured by diamond tipped brushes which create small hills and valleys within the stone and can sometimes follow the grain on tougher stones.
The popularity of this stone can be traced back to the rise and dominance of the quartz market. Quartz has done a very good job at replicating the colour and veins of natural stone such as marble. The textured finish creates a higher slip rating than honed but is still smooth to touch, so it is perfect for flooring in areas such as living areas and even bathrooms. Not only that but the finish hides scratches and etches much better than a honed surface, and so it is even more suitable for kitchen and vanity benchtops.
