When starting a new task whether it is large or small a plan must be outlined and followed. This article should serve those just beginning in the web site design industry. Top website designing companies never stop innovating and adapting to new trends and technologies. That means to some this will sound elementary and to others it may serve a handy guideline for those beginning in the industry. I will briefly describe and expand on each of the principles:
1. Graphics
Keep graphics simple and relevant to the content on the site. Having large graphics which have to upload can slow down a site and make it annoying for the user to browse. Reign in your use of flash and images that may cause a distraction for your clients, no one wants to see flashing lights and rotating objects when all they are looking for is a solution to their problem. In short less is more, create focused and well themed graphics that help highlight the content and not hide it.
2. Layouts
Chose the layout format carefully, having too many frames in the site can create a sense of chaos and confusion. When it comes to layout a classic 3 column set up seems to work the best because it’s been proven to throughout time in newspapers and magazines. Cautiously be aware of whitespace in your web design site as it is a function to your overall layout. Google can be used as one example of how whitespace become iconic for the company and has come to stand for its understated proficiency and expertise.
3. Fonts
Limit the number of different fonts you have in a site, it will begin to resemble more of an art project than an actual designer website. Considering using only two or three at the most of the classic fonts in your site’s design, this will give it a streamlined and professional look. Stick with fonts that your readers will most likely be familiar with. Even though you as a designer may have access to the latest and greatest fonts does not mean your clients will be able to read it in their browsers.
4. Advertising
Many sites make this mistake early on, accepting all those requests to advertise on your site. It sounds like a good idea to generate revenue for the site but you may just be alienating those people that are actually coming to your site for the content. Treat advertisements like graphics, keep them small and simple and focus on the content.
Always keep your reads in mind when designing a web design website, they are your ultimate audience and although you should explore new techniques and innovations be sure to keep it original and focused.
