Understanding the Difference between Conventional Dentures and Implant Supported Dentures

Traditional removable dentures are a pain to use, and that's really all there is to say about it. Due to developments in modern dentistry, people have the choice to replace their conventional dentures with denture implants.
What are denture implants?

The procedure requires the use of dental implants placed in the jaw. These implants then help or retain a full or partial denture. In contrast, conventional dentures only stay on the gum and are not maintained by implants. That's why most regular dentures usually are loose and ill-fitting. Implant supported dentures apply the usage of an attachment that lock on to a matching attachment on the implant.

It's important to note that even if this treatment seems ideal, it may not be for everybody. Implant supported dentures are for those who are missing teeth, but also have enough bone in their jaws to support the implant. These implants are usually made for the lower jaw as most conventional dentures have a natural tendency to be unstable there. This can be attested to by the millions who still use standard dentures.

How does it work? What are my options?

There's two kinds of denture implants being used today: bar retained and ball retained.

Bar retained - This option applies the use of a thin metal bar that follows the curves of your jaw. The bar is fastened onto the implants that drilled into the jaw. Once in place, clips or other attachments on the denture are utilized to lock these two in place.

Ball retained - The main difference between this option and the other is the appliance used to link the denture. In this case, a ball-shaped appliance is attached to the implants. The dentures are then locked on to the implants via a socket-like feature. It's this sort that's more common and popular with most patients. As is the case with many medical conditions, speak with your dentist to find out which is best for you.

What are the benefits of having implant supported dentures over regular ones?

The first advantage people often go on about is the chance to eat normally again. Having detachable dentures removes the fun in eating because denture adhesives can fail you at a moment's notice. This isn't so with implants. With implants, you have reassurance that your teeth will continue to be right where they're meant to be. The only limitations are hard and excessively sticky food, that can cause damage to the dentures.

Better appearance - Many people with regular dentures often whine about how unnatural their smiles look. With implants, the teeth look natural because there is less plastic used. Implants apply the use of dentures with an acrylic base. The teeth on the denture, which are connected to the base, are normally crafted from porcelain. Together, they give the appearance of a natural smile.

Needless to say, improved physical appearance will lead to improved self-esteem. Nothing's better than eating, talking, and smiling; knowing full well your teeth are going to stay where they're meant to. Bear in mind the procedure may involve risks, so it's best to seek advice from a skilled practitioner.
