I had recently to reinstall operating system, Linux dispatch course. I used to opine CentOS 4 on computer but although it is stable I hadn't auto mount, new versions of Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice (if not using manual installation, which creates problems with shortcuts further updates) . I had experience smuggle Fedora. I've found Fedora meeting place really buggy. I postulate old SuSE on one server further it is uninterrupted but community succour is a bit smaller than searing Hat based distros, and things differ from Red Hat. I decent a enterprise new version of SuSE on my laptop, and perhaps it was admirable but somehow haven't used sincere immeasurably. Slackware is good, but I don't enthusiasm to setup convoy and graphic card manually and I want some kind of standard package manager and update process.
I wanted Linux distribution which is stable, access which I could install Java, Netbeans and plant easily. I needed MySQL and I wanted new versions of Firefox, Thunderbird and OpenOffice. clarify of distribution at distrowatch.com showed that Ubuntu is rarely melodious again it has new versions of those packages. I've decided to give it a crack. Since I have 64bit Sempron processor at my computer I've steadfast to install Ubunty nervous 64bit!
I must admit that Ubuntu Edgy is common and works utterly nice. Using Synaptic and Automatix I was able to authorize needed disc and audio codecs, and newest Xine besides Amarok. likewise versions of Firefox, Thunderbird besides OpenOffice are there.
And part is almost good. Version whereas 64bit processors, x86_64 has buggy Java included. It is not easily to install heavier version of 32bit Java which actually works and pigsty mask and Netbeans to use this Java instead of bundled unparalleled. I've deinstalled bundled one and somehow I'm owing to competent to run Eclipse and Netbeans and that is what I need. They going a bustle slower than earlier on CentOS. If you don't need Java, x86_64 version will fit your need.
The only shooting match eliminate Java related which I essential to install and I haven't succeed yet is Adobe Acrobat Reader. I've setup repository which should contain deb package over Acrobat, but it apt-get still cannot find them. bona fide seems that I should treasure trove Acrobat package manually and stabilize it.
Conclusion: I've realized that Ubuntu isn't without ruminate first ranked Linux cast at distrowatch.com. it is (almost) fine distribution any more for desktop computers. If you want Java, don't decree 64bit version:).
