Some century old patters like paisley designs, floral designs, block printing, bandhani designs and kantha embroidery have succeeded in creating their own place in world stage. They are cherished for beauty and authentic city.
Just like designs, fabrics used in making of scarves are also appraised for the quality. Mulberry, Tussar, oak tussar, muga and eri are the types of natural silk used commercially and India has expertise in production of all types of silk especially the last four. All kinds of silk are used in the production of silk scarves including artificial silk. Mulberry and Tussar are two widely used fabrics used in manufacturing of scarves. Tussar silk is treasured for its smooth texture and stunning gold color which is truly deep and rich.
Mulberry is produced from the cocoons of the larvae of mulberry silkworm which is reared in captivity. While tussar is a wild silk obtained from the cocoons of silkworm from trees like Arjun, Saja and Sal. Tussar silk is also known as Ahimsa silk (non-violent) because silk is collected after larva leave the cocoon. The production of this silk is mainly concentrated in Jharkhand, India.
Tussar silk fabrics are best as base for handicrafts. Its alluring smooth and sheen texture allow designs to sparkle this is the reason why Tussar silk scarves are look elegant and pleasing. The beautiful designs like Kantha embroidery of West Bengal do the wonder on such piece of cloth. Scarves of tussar silk are also decorated by block printing, madhubani painting, bandhani, floral designs, mythological prints and animal prints.
Many people have misconception that silk scarves look very feminine so men should not have these that is a completely wrong notion. Men’s silk scarves show their soft and caring side, not act as barrier for their muscular appearance. Neutral or solid color scarves will look perfect on men. Like other silk fabrics, tussar is fine and long lasting fabric but utmost care should be taken while cleaning as they are vulnerable when wet. Prefer dry cleaning of tussar scarf over hand wash. Machine wash is strictly not recommended. Wash in cold water with mild soap. Do not wring out water and dry in shaded place. Also silk fabrics need space to breathe so never put them in plastic for longer period. To know you have purchased a pure tussar scarf, just pull out a strand of thread from fabric and burn it, if ash smell like burnt hair then it is a pure tussar if not or even solid residue left then it is a synthetic material.
