One of the most common methods of therapy for cerebral palsy is physical therapy. This can help the patient move more independently by gaining muscle flexibility and balance.
Although cerebral palsy remains incurable up to this day, there are methods that can help in easing down this condition using a variety of therapies for cerebral palsy. The therapy method one will choose will be based on the type of cerebral palsy as well as the recommendation of the doctor that handles the patient. Various types of therapies can certainly help develop muscle coordination or train the body to regain some of its control in order for the patient to be able to gain some form of physical independence that may come important in performing regular daily tasks.
One of the most common methods of therapy for cerebral palsy is physical therapy. This can help the patient move more independently by gaining muscle flexibility and balance. This is also very important in preventing the degradation of the muscles, which ends up becoming permanently stiff in time. Physical therapy is very effective when implemented on the onset of cerebral palsy. If a child is diagnosed early, it means that physical therapy can still restore some of the functions of the affected muscle. And depending on the age as well as the type of cerebral palsy, a physical therapist may also introduce various types of stretches and exercises using different frequencies on every execution.
Another type of therapy for children with cerebral palsy is speech therapy. Even before a child begins to speak, it is easy to look for definitive signs that can determine whether or not speech will become a challenge later on. This method is also effective in detecting and resolving developmental delays and the assessment of whether or not speech therapy may work. If the child fails to reach personal milestones for babies in particular or at a specific chronological age, there is a good chance that the cerebral palsy may be causing developmental delays, especially in speech. With speech therapy, the treatment program will teach the child about various ways to communicate. If the facial muscles are affected, it will be difficult for the child to speak and learning to communicate in other ways than speech will be helpful later on.
But depending on the condition, speech therapy may include actual verbal speech or by using a speech assistive device or learning how to use sign language. Another purpose for this therapy is to be able to teach the child with cerebral palsy to understand what is being communicated to them. This can also resolve swallowing problems and rectify the tendency of the patient to drool. Occupational therapy on the other hand helps a child with cerebral palsy to function properly and complete daily activities on their own. Occupational therapy will teach children with basic activities like dressing up, cleaning themselves, and going to the toilet. Depending on the condition, other activities related at home or at school may also be taught like moving around with little assistance as the condition will permit, sitting, eating by themselves, writing, and other daily activities.
