In the course of our lives, we often come across people suffering from autism and learning disabilities. It is, but obvious, that such people need proper care and attention. Let us take a closer look at the clinical features of those suffering from these disorders.
Learning Disabilities
Dyslexia – It is a disorder where the person has trouble writing, reading, spelling, and sometimes even speaking.
Dyscalculia – This is a disorder characterised by a person’s disability to learn or perform mathematical problems.
Visual Processing Disorder – It is of various types but the main characteristic of a person suffering from this disorder is that he has trouble understanding and assimilating the information he is presented with.
Executive Function Issues – This is a disorder where a person has issues in sticking to plans or setting and achieving objectives.
Dyspraxia – This is a condition affecting a person’s co-ordination as well as motor skills. It is also called Developmental Motor Skill Disorder.
Dysgraphia – Also known as Agraphia, this is characterized by a person’s inability to write.
Speech and Language Problems – It is a disorder where the child has difficulty in grasping verbal cues, articulating, finding the right words, or expressing himself verbally.
Nonverbal Learning Disorder – Often those suffering from this disorder have strong writing, vocabulary, and reading skills, but they difficulty interacting with others, as they are unable to pick up facial expressions, the tone of voice, nonverbal cues, body language etc.
If learning disabilities are detected in early childhood, there are chances professional training can help them in overcome these issues.
Autism
People suffering from autism have problems with nonverbal & communications and social interactions. At times, they may have heightened or low senses of touch, smell, sight, taste or hearing. They experience unusual distress if routines are altered. They are usually seen performing repetitive movements and having unusually obsessive attachment to certain objects. They are withdrawn and do not have friends. They prefer spending their time alone and may treat others as objects. They even show a lack of empathy. These people are not startled by loud noises and often withdraw from physical contacts as they are over stimulating or overwhelming. They have short attention spans and very narrow interests. They often ‘act up’ with intense tantrums. They also have a tendency to lick or rub surfaces and objects.
However, autism education helps the patients a great deal in overcoming these problems. These programs are designed to help them cope up with their disabilities and lead a better life.
