When working with limited time and budget, staying within your own province makes sense, and there are enough interesting places in Yunnan, that even in five years, never quite got through all of them - there are still places I'd like to see. However, although there are still new places but not seen, several places kept me coming back for more, again and again.
When working with limited time and budget, staying within your own province makes sense, and there are enough interesting places in Yunnan, that even in five years, never quite got through all of them - there are still places I'd like to see. However, although there are still new places but not seen, several places kept me coming back for more, again and again. The following are just some of the places I've visited, and kept visiting.

This favorite of backpackers is also the weekend of the election of expatriate tired of Kunming city scene. Dali is very close and convenient you can leave on a Friday night, spend a few days rest and basking in Dali, and return home in time for work on Monday. Most expatriates, myself included, did nothing in particular during weekends in Dali, I see no sights or any up hills, but rested on the bar of Birds (the guest house of choice of expatriates in Yunnan), trapped in reading, snaked up and down looking for good company Renmin lu, and the party of the night. Some of the more athletic can ride a bike around Lake Erhai, but most of my memories Dalí (which remain intact anyway) are just resting in a relaxed, doing things chill out.

Shuhe is a relatively recent development, a small village outside of Lijiang, which was developed to alleviate some of the overflow of Lijiang. Since the Chinese still hordes of package tourists usually prefer to Lijiang, Shuhe is a much better choice for expatriates who want a change of scenery from Dalí, good music, beautiful scenery, and some hiking. Makes me want to "discovered" several years Shuhe when my friends and I, after having walked to the village of Wenhai, a town halfway accessible only by dirt road to the mountain, we walked down again, got a little off track, and ended in Shuhe, it is precisely in the bottom of the hill. While Shuhe was originally an ancient people with a lot of old architecture, much of the village has become a "Guzhen", an "old town", which, indeed, is all new. However, the relatively new-ity of most Shuhe not take away its beauty. Shuhe architecture is all done in the old Naxi style, and the flow channel through the city as much as they do in Lijiang. In the back of Shuhe the old part of town still, and while the town is small, walking and exploring can be rewarding. Shuhe is a good starting point for trips to Lijiang area during the day, or just relaxing.

The problem with travel is all entrance fees annoying. Now it is worth paying attention to all the really wonderful places around Yunnan, without tickets, which include incredible scenery, really good shows, exhibitions, parks and other places. It is a good place for a stopover before planning trips out of Lijiang. They show a lot of beautiful places that tour guides often do not like to visit. Of course other places have a lot of very large sites to visit without the hassle entrance fee. No need to go exactly where everyone else will.
