I have had a special interest in the national banner of Sudan for a number of years. This horizontal banner is a tricolor, meaning that this flag is made up of 3 bands (also called stripes). This flag also displays a triangle on the left side of the national ensign, also called the hoist side. The Sudanese proudly hoist this ensign on Sudanese flag poles.
This country has an official designation, which is: the republic of the Sudan. This landlocked country is located in the eastern part of the continent of Africa, with countries such as Egypt and other bordering this beautiful territory. Back in the day, it came under rule of the British as well as the Egyptians, about one century ago, right around the turn of the century.
Like other world countries, Sudan has a history that includes the use of the different flags. In fact, when this country was granted independence, another ensign was hoisted on Sudanese flag poles. The use of colors was different. The current banner was adopted some 4 decades ago.
The new national flag was first flown from Sudanese flag poles on May 20, 1970. It was in fact patterned after the Egyptian flag to express the regime's pan-Arab policies.
The republic of the Sudan is also a member of the United Nations. But, the United Nations not alone, Sudan also joined other important world organizations such as the African Union and others. The capital city of this incredible country is the city of Khartoum, which is inhabited by some five million people!
Like other national banners, the Sudanese flag's colors have specific meaning. The color red is said to represent the socialist revolution and the blood shed by the country's patriots. White symbolizes peace and refers to the flag adopted in the 1924 revolution. Black refers to the name of the country. Sudan means "black" in Arabic, hence the republic of the Sudan or black. The color green represents prosperity and is common color used in Islamic nations.
In terms of the country's education, most of it is found the republic's capital city of Khartoum. In this city high schools are found, but also public and private universities, including the International University of Africa, the Nile Valley University and the Public Health Institute.
As mentioned in this article, the flag of Egypt as hoisted on modern Egyptian flag poles, has interesting similarity to the Sudanese ensign. Similarities among other world flags include the banners flown by the Netherlands (also referred to as Holland at times) and Luxembourg, etc.
