Travel mugs have reached an unimaginable level of popularity over the last ten years when it comes to drinkware items. People have found them extremely useful as companions on their commute to work supplying them with fresh coffee on-the-go. Interestingly, travel mugs are just one type of thermal-insulating portable drinking vessels that people use. In fact, travel mugs are often misinterpreted and what is commonly called a travel mug – may not actually be a travel mug. In an effort to clear up the semantics, this article will list the three different kinds of thermal-insulating portable drinking vessels often attributed to the term “travel mug”.

Insulated Tumblers – A tumbler describes a vessel that is flat bottomed and has a fairly cylindrical design. A tumbler is usually characterized by the lack of a handle. Because tumblers do not have handles they often have supplementary features like rubber grips or rigid designed for grip. To be an insulated tumbler, it must have a pop-top or screw top lid that prevents heat from escaping. Tumblers are growing in popularity because they can hold more liquid and have less bulky designs. Many people also find tumblers more aesthetically pleasing than travel mugs because of their cylindrical designs. Though tumblers can be made of stainless steel or plastic they are also attributed to drinking glasses of similar shape.

Insulated Flasks – Flasks are designed to hold large amounts of liquid and refill travel mugs or tumblers. Some insulated flasks have around twenty-five ounces of liquid which is enough to fill five cups of coffee. Though flasks are larger than travel mugs or tumblers, they remain portable by being made of light weight material like stainless steel or plastic and hold a manageable amount of liquid. Insulated flasks can be carried with travel mugs or tumblers to provide portable refills. Insulated flasks are also called Vacuum Flasks and can come in gift sets with matching travel mugs.

Travel Mugs – And of course, travel mugs belong on this list as well. A travel mug is characterized as a thermal-insulating vessel with handle and tight lid seal. Most travel mugs also have a convenient sip top area that allows users to drink coffee without letting heat out. Travel mugs are the most popular type of portable thermal-insulating drinking vessel and are commonly used at home and work. Travel mugs are also extremely popular with students who use them to keep coffee warm at class and while studying. Travel mugs can be made of stainless steel, plastic or even ceramic material.
