Let’s kick things off with the Feira do Rio Antigo, a monthly event that in April will be held on the first Saturday. Here, the Rua do Lavradio will transform into an antiques market – the Feira do Rio Antigo, where customers will have the possibility to browse through no more than 100 stalls, bars and the restaurants will extend their tables and chairs onto the pavement. The opening hours are between 10 AM and 6 PM.
One day later, on the 3rd of April, Feira Hippie (Hippie market) will be opened from 7 AM until 7 PM at Praca General Osorio in Ipanema. It is a tradition that started in 1968 and since then, on every Sunday, buyers have a good place where to purchase musical instruments, paintings, jewelry, leather, toys, furniture, clothes and handicrafts.
One of the many annual events that will be held in Rio de Janeiro this year is the Holy Week. During this week, the Metropolitan Cathedral will be packed, the most important time of the Roman Catholic calendar. There will be a Mass on Maundy Thursday, the Passion of Christ and procession on Good Friday, Easter Virgil on Saturday and Easter Sunday Mass. Visit hours will be between 7 AM and 7 PM (Monday to Friday) and 8 AM until 12 PM (Saturday and Sunday). The Mass hours are: Saturday & Sunday 10 AM; Monday, Wednesday, Friday 11 AM, Tuesday and Thursday 9 AM.
Another annual event is going to be the Rio Boat Show at the Marina da Gloria where visitors will be able to see the newest boat models and the equipment related to nautical, along with a complex entertainment schedule. It is the biggest boat show in Latin America where many tourists gather, along with some local famous people. The opening hours are between 3 PM and 10 PM (Mon-Fri) and 12 PM 10 PM (Sat-Sun).
If you enjoy watching movies and you plan on visiting Rio this April, don’t forget to drop by at the It’s All True Film Festival, which is considered by many the best documentary event in all South America. There will be a rich collection of well over 140 screenings of non-fiction and experimental film so you will definitely have something to see.
The city of Rio de Janeiro celebrates every year in April, the rich cultural heritage that stems from the indigenous peoples of Brazil. The event will be held on 19th of the month and exhibitions, indigenous dance performances along with screenings will take place at the Museu do Indio. The city also commemorates the Martyr of Independence, Tiradentes, who was hung in 1972 for admitting his part in a rebel group that called for the country’s independence. This day will be marked with various civic ceremonies at the Tiradentes Palace.
