Welding is a career choice that has many options. When someone says “I am a welder,” it could mean that they do literally hundreds of different types of jobs. Some welders work with small electronics. Others work on bridges or ships. Still other welders work under the sea. One field of welding that is essential to the daily safety of millions of people is welding inspection.

What is Welding Inspection?

A welding inspector travels to job sites and literally inspects the work of welders. They ensure that the finished welds meet all codes and regulations and that the welds are strong enough to withstand the amount of stress that will be placed upon them, once they are approved. Depending upon the type of construction project or manufacturing job, welding inspectors may look at completed projects or works-in-progress. This would be determined by the individual project as well as local safety and inspection codes.

Visual inspections are conducted to look for issues like cracking and pitting. First, the welding inspector will make a visual sweep without any aids. Next, he or she will use specialized magnifying lenses to look for smaller defects or issues that may weaken the weld. They take measurements of welds and finally, they will conduct specialized stress tests on the welded material before giving an assessment of the job.

Welding inspectors have specialized tools that they use to perform stress tests, and each job’s testing process is unique. All of the welding inspector’s notes are submitted to the job foreman who will ensure that the necessary corrections, if any, are completed. If corrections are required, the welding inspector will return to test them.

Welding inspectors are also responsible for inspecting and testing actual welding machinery to ensure they are safe for welders to use. These types of inspections are critical to ensure the safety of the workforce, as welding can actually be a dangerous field.

Welding Inspector Training

It takes specialized education and on-the-job training in order to become a professional welding inspector. The first step toward pursuing this career is to enroll in a technical school that offers a welding inspector Associate's degree. This program should provide a solid foundation for understanding the fundamentals of welding as well as more advanced principles of the welding trade.

Students enrolled in a welding inspector Associate's degree program can expect to learn applied math. Math is a key element of welding, and professional welding inspectors must know how to make the appropriate calculations for determining how much stress a weld can hold. Welding inspector students will also learn how to read and understand blueprints for small and large projects. They will learn how to perform many different types of welds and will receive instruction on safety as well as tools and machinery.

These degree programs will expose students to different types of welding, the applied science behind welding and will learn how to utilize special welding inspection tools. Before enrolling in a welding inspector Associate’s degree program, students should visit the campus of the school, look at the course materials and understand the expectations for graduation.
