When you think about India, often the only thing that’s bound to prop up in your mind is the Taj Mahal or the Himalayas. However, there is so much more that this enchanting country has to offer. Take a quick peek at some of the lesser known tourist places in India.

* The Hills of Cherrapunjee

Located in the state of Meghalaya, Cherrapunjee is the wettest state in India. However, it doesn’t rain during the winter, which is an ideal time to plan your vacation. The Mawsmai falls and the Khasi Monoliths found here are visual delights. You can enjoy a relaxed vacation amongst a beautiful natural setting and take in the silence of the land.

* The Pristine Beaches of Varkala

Varkala is located in the southern state of Kerala. The most attractive feature of the beaches here are the mighty cliffs lined up adjacent to the Arabian Sea. The beaches are clean and empty, making it the ideal destination to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

* Sikkim - The Majestic Mountains

Sikkim is a small town nestled away in the mountainous suburbs of Nepal, Bhutan and China. The freshness of the Himalayan air, the lush green scenery and the majestic range of mountains notably Kanchenjunga, make Sikkim a paradise for weary travelers looking to escape from the crowds and congestion of the city.

Apart from being one of the lesser known tourist places in India, it is also the least populous. Strings of Buddhist Monasteries add color to the mountain scenery. The people here are extremely warm and friendly.

* Tarkali Beach

Tarkali Beach is located to the south of Maharashtra. Here, the sea water is crystal clear and you can see through the water for up to 15 feet. This makes it an ideal spot for water sports such as scuba diving and snorkeling. Some of the other tourist spots include Sindhudurg Fort and Devbag Beach. You must try out the delicious Malwani cuisine where fresh seafood is cooked in coconut based gravy.

* Dandeli

Dandeli is located in the state of Karnataka and is popular for whitewater rafting along the River Kali. With unpredictable rapids set against a beautiful scenic backdrop, it is the ideal destination to bring out your adventurous side.

Canoeing trips and overnight rafting packages are also offered here. While planning a trip to India, be sure to visit some of these alluring destinations which do not fall under the ordinary tourist trail!
