Kerala's tropical coastline.
With over 230 million people, four official languages and nearly 650,000 square kilometers of space, South India can be a formidable destination for any traveler. Those that take the time to visit will find a vastly different world from the congested cities like Mumbai and Delhi to the north. From sprawling coastlines to majestic mountain ranges, the geography of the region offers a diversity to match its wide array of people and cultures.
Transportation
The main commercial airport serving South India is located in Chennai, with international links to Europe and Asia. Smaller cities such as Kochi and Bangalore have daily connections to Mumbai and Delhi. India's extensive rail network affords travel from any corner of the country, although this can be quite time-consuming depending on your origin. Driving is less practical, as many roads are not designed for high-speed travel; however, bus tours are available in some areas.
Lodging
Larger cities have a wide array of options, from business-class hotels to cheaper motels and the ubiquitous YMCA. In particular, the tech-industry cities of Hyderabad and Bangalore offer many long-term serviced apartments for those staying more than a few days. Smaller towns and villages have few options; you might have to arrange with a local family to stay at their place.
Camping
Since the majority of South India is vastly rural, you might be interested in camping. Many tour operators offer packages including supplies (such as tents) and food, with modern toilet facilities and activities like hiking and bird-watching. As of 2010, the typical cost for a night of camping would be around $50 to $100 per person, depending on the amenities.
Sights
South India has a rich diversity, both geographically and socially. From the ranges of the Ghats mountains to the palm-lined beaches on the coast, nature is a compelling reason to visit. You'll also see the many sides of life, from rural farmers tending acres of fields, to the young professionals of the bustling cities. Temples are worth seeing, with their intricate architecture. The larger the city, the more impressive the structure.
Food
Vegetarians will find comfort in the cuisine of South India, with meatless options available everywhere. The popular foods of the north (such as Tandoori kebabs) can be found in larger cities. Along the coast, freshly caught seafood predominates, at a range of costs depending on the quality of the restaurant. You shouldn't miss the traditional offering of multiple small dishes served on a banana leaf; it's the signature meal in these parts.
Language
Many locals in cities and larger towns speak English, especially younger people and hotel staff. You might want to hire a taxi driver to act as a guide if you're intent on visiting rural areas or smaller villages. There are literally hundreds of dialects in India, so don't be surprised if communication is a bit tricky at times.
Shopping
Despite the abundance of farmland, South India is also a major manufacturing region. Textiles and jewelry are the big sellers, with the quality ranging from knock-off to knock-out. Most cities and even small towns will have marketplaces where you can browse for all types of goods at bargain prices. Women will especially be interested in the wide array of blouses, saris and accessories on sale. Villages are good options for small, handmade souvenirs.
