The world is your oyster, but where do you start.
The world is your oyster, but where do you start? First time backpackers may be a little apprehensive about the whole experience and your gut is probably knotted with a blend of excitement and nerves. You want to get out there and explore, but don’t want to stray too far from civilised toilets, the Internet and stomach-settling food. These three countries allow you to sample the freedom that backpacking can offer, without drifting too far into the unknown.

Australia: The land down under has been welcoming backpackers for decades and now has it down to a ‘t’. Hostels have their own Internet cafes, kitchens, launderettes, TV rooms, different sized dorms, single sex dorms and single and double rooms.

Public transport is affordable, simple and functional. Specific tour-ops specialise in backpacker trips that boast almost limitless numbers and types of activities.

The icing on the cake is the heavily travelled backpacker route along the east coast. You will easily make friends and you’ll bump into them again and again as you make your way around this massive country.

Thailand: Beautiful beaches, magnificent monuments and colourful culture make Thailand a backpacker favourite. It was in the 1970s when ‘hippies’ first started expanding their minds in the region that the country really got a name for itself as the ultimate ‘traveller’ destination and since then the country has come on in leaps and bounds.

It has now been westernised somewhat, with McDonalds and Starbucks everywhere and there’s even a Tesco on Koh Samui, but this doesn’t detract from its beauty. The people can never do too much to help, hostels are basic but cheap and well located. Here you can feel that you have escaped the western world but still retain many of its luxuries such as electricity and toilets, although these can be a little hit in miss in the most rural areas.

South Africa: The African continent may have more than its fair share of struggles and strife but when you meet the ordinary people you will find it hard to understand why. They are probably the most generous people in the world. Travelling around is cheap and easy, with many companies already set up to transport backpackers from hostel to hostel and game reserve to beach. The landscape is beautiful and there is so much to see from ‘big five’ game viewing to learning to surf you will never get bored and your money will go a long way.

Once you have decided on where to go, maybe its all three, maybe more, or maybe one, you will need the proper insurance. Backpackers are one of the most at-risk groups of travellers, so be prepared for the unknown so that you can relax and enjoy every minute of it.

Remember though, backpackers are a high-risk group of travellers so its better prepare for the unknown by sorting out adequate insurance. This way you can relax and enjoy every minute of your adventure.
