You may have noticed that large outdoor digital signage displays on billboards or businesses seem to be all over the place. These displays are numbering into the tens of thousands across America, and are likely to grow a lot higher in the near future.

The digital industry research firm IHS recently released a report that showed that the number of shipments of UHD panels that are in modern TV screens today (for 4K resolution) will grow to about 145,000 shipped units in 2014. That is about a 600 percent increase over 2013's figure of about only 21,000 units! And by 2018, that figure is expected to grow to about 656,000 UHD panels shipped. Clearly growth in digital screens is on the upswing with no signs of losing strength.

And in retail outlets where consumers are connected closely, digital signage is becoming so large that it's taking on a life of its own. A study from Deloitte shows that customers actually prefer going to a digital display in a store than to talk to a sales associate. And the presence of digital displays both inside and outside of a store is helping to increasing the amount of customer spending within a store.

Using digital LCD display in outdoor situations will cost more upfront than traditional, static displays. That's mainly because of the initial investment cost of the display and installation of the systems. But over time (sometimes less than a year), the ROI and increased profits will come into play, due to the ability to change content messaging and bring in outside sponsors (see more below). Digital displays offer more flexibility to owners and advertisers, with the option to sell ad space to bring in extra revenues. That can't happen on a static traditional sign package.

Is the time coming for your business to find a custom digital display for your place of business? Then, here are five considerations to keep in mind when converting to outdoor digital signage for your modern communications.

Location Matters: Where are you placing your signage? Are customers able to see the signage well? Take some time to consider where you put your digital displays

Use Great Content: It's important to create compelling content, using professional messages for your digital display network. Because you want solid reception for your content, so make it good and people will notice.

Ease of Content Updates: How easily can the content be changed to target a specific audience? How quickly can the signage content be changed to pitch effectively to a drive-by audience (if the signage is placed along the highway)? Those are critical aspects of any good digital signage network.

Work with Sponsors: Digital signage network owners can leverage some of the cost to sponsors and showcase their digital messages at certain times. Use this targeted special promotion ability for an exclusive network offer. You’ll earn plaudits from sponsors and help create dollars.

Use the Right Software: Changing content has to be easy. Get the industry standard software for dynamic outdoor digital signage. Your digital display manufacturer will have the right insights on software for the signage.

Be flexible with your needs, but make sure that your have enough resources for your digital signage without a need to replace the system later. For more information on outdoor digital signage networks, contact ADTI Media, a manufacturer of innovative signage opportunities.
