Corrosion Inhibitors are chemical compounds which are used to prevent corrosion of metals. These inhibitors protect the metals by forming a protective layer over the metal surface.
Inhibitors are chemicals that react with a metallic surface or the environment of its exposure to provide protection from corrosion. The effectiveness of these inhibitors depends on the fluid composition, flow regime and the quantity of water.

Types of corrosion Inhibitors

There are several types of corrosion inhibitors present, depending on the substance they are protecting and their action.

The main types of inhibitors are Anodic Inhibitors, Cathodic Inhibitors, mixed Inhibitors and Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors. Anodic Inhibitors, , are those which form a protective oxide film on the surface of the metal causing a large anodic shift of the corrosion Potential, for example, Chromates, Nitrates etc. Cathodic Inhibitors are those which slow down the cathodic reaction or limit the diffusion of the reducing species to the metallic surface, for example Sulphites and Bisulphites. Mixed Inhibitors work by forming a film on the surface and blocking both anodic as well as cathodic sites. Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors neutralize the acidic effect of other compounds or shift the pH towards less acidic value.

Importance of Corrosion Inhibitors

Corrosion inhibitors are highly used in Chemical Industries and are used for:.

Preventing the Wastage of metal

Metal waste is a big problem in chemical Industries as lot of metal is rendered unusable because of the corrosion or decay of the metal .The rusting of Iron; corrosion of magnesium etc. can be brought under control by use of Corrosion Inhibitors.
Keeping the machines in working Order

The machines and tools used in Chemical Industries are in constant contact with chemicals which can trigger early corrosion by increasing the corrosion rate. Corrosion takes place when the corrosion potential is high. This can be kept under check by the use of proper corrosion inhibitors. Mixed Inhibitors are added to the solvent flowing through the machines like agitators, blenders, pipes and ducts to keep the corrosion at bay.
Lowering the total Cost

Usage of corrosion inhibitors will prevent the
corrosionof machine, ducts, valves etc. Hence saving the millions spend for their replacements.
Inhibitors are important because they protect the tools and are cost effective and hence are a wise choice for retain the efficiency of machines.
