What should you keep in mind if you plan to take an online MBA course. Stay ahead of the others and avoid the mistakes that they will surely make.
|
We have already proven that the many myths about online MBA degrees being worthless are just that, myths. We live in a digital age, and many are opting for the convenience of online education. If you are looking at the possibility of online education or even have already enrolled, there are some things you should keep in mind. Many people complicate themselves and their lives by making easily avoidable mistakes. Read on, and you could save yourself some time and money.
Accreditation is everything
We’ve all heard about the prejudice that many people have about almost any online university. Well, there actually exists people on the other end of the spectrum; people who think any online school will do. This simply isn’t true. There exists hundreds of websites promoting an incredibly cheap and fast MBA degree. The bad news is, these schools will take your money and leave you with nothing to show of value to an employer. Now, this does not mean that all online schools are bad.
What you have to look for BEFORE enrolling is if that school is accredited regionally or professionally . For example, many online MBA programs accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The AACSB is a well-established, respected accrediting agency that is trusted by many employers in the field of business.
Not taking it seriously
Online education is convenient and time saving, yet, it is anything but easy. Let’s get one thing straight here: The online MBA curriculum is the same as the campus one, with minor differences. In fact, many people might even say it’s harder. Without a professor looking over your shoulder, slacking off becomes increasingly easier. As a result, many students tend to disregard study periods, assignments and even exams. That is why distance-learning is just not for anyone; it requires time managing skills and exceptional self-discipline.
One key to being able to handle all this is a proper sense of balance. If you don’t want to be a full time student, don’t take a full-time work load. Pace yourself by setting a dedicated study time everyday, and not trying to finish it all that day. Remember that the time you might save by not commuting will be spent reading and doing assignments. Putting in the minimum effort will always yield the minimum score.
Don’t forget to network
One of the most important and beneficial parts of business schools is the networking part of the program. Many MBA graduates will leave school with an address book full of contacts in various specialties just waiting to be contacted for future endeavors. Many people will think that this part of the program is non-existent in an online environment. Those people are wrong. All online programs have chat sessions, message boards, and discussion forums, all designed to introduce you to other students sharing your goals
Since online programs usually feature students who still work as professionals while studying, your peers will always offer helpful and invaluable suggestions based on experience. This will really shine as you work together in group projects. If you think an online MBA program is solely for antisocials and hermits, then you ought to know that students will not even come close to passing the course without any human interaction.
You can still get work experience
Internships and other work-study programs are another essential part of an MBA program. It’s a way for students to experience their theoretical studies put into real life situations. It makes no difference if you are full time MBA student or part time online MBA student, the choice of an MBA internship is a critical step in achieving career and job search success. Since many online MBA programs don’t have a part time internship as a course requirement, many simply don’t even think about this program.
This is one of the biggest mistakes you could make. An internship will provide you with real work experience, new contacts for that big address book you have, and if all goes well, it can even land you a job after graduate. Once you have decided which core subjects to take in your MBA degree, you should be able to identify which particular field and which industry you wish to intern. Ask your school what work-study programs they offer, or even better, contact different companies to find out what internships they offer.
Many people seriously underestimate the value of work experience, not realizing that employers look at that part of your resume right after they read MBA graduate.
