Leon Levy, CEO of Klingshield SA cc, Johannesburg says “Every day I hear about stores being hit by thieves who smash windows, grab goods and run for their lives. The reason that this happens is because glass is a vulnerable, easy to break substrate. Windows need to be protected in a store but the problem is store windows need to be clear to enable the goods to be displayed.”
Clear safety films are utilized worldwide to prevent smash and grabbers
from doing a quick hit, grab and run. Safety films come in a variety of thicknesses and obviously the thicker the film the more difficult it is to break through. Many store owners worldwide utilise window film to protect their businesses.
Stores like Apple have had numerous smash and grab attempts over the
last few years.
Recent newspaper reports in London tell a story of how the famous
Chanel Store was hit by smash and grabbers and according to the Daily
Mail, in August six men attacked the store windows with hammers in Old
Bond Street and then fled on motor bikes. Twenty raids have been
reported this year in the Westminister area alone. Some stores have
been hit twice.
Other stores that have been hit recently are the Dolce and Gabbana New
Bond Street store and Larzia, which sells designer handbags.
This style of attack is an easy way and a low risk for thieves to
operate and is becoming more and more popular in all major cities.
Smash and grabbers rely on speed to do their trade but safety film on windows slow there process down and also create a noise that makes them paranoid.
Safety film applied to the glass turns ordinary glass into safety glass,
making it more difficult to penetrate. This is also an inexpensive method to shatterproof windows.
Some retailers utilize a fixing system on the edges of the windows to
reinforce the film, making it more difficult to penetrate on the
side edges. In some high risk areas consideration should be taken into
account as conventional fixing system are not strong enough.
