China’s economic development has attracted more and more overseas students returning to obtain employment. However, these overseas students, especially those post-80s only child overseas students, face various pressures from family, society and work.
Most of post-80s are the only child of their families, so they tend to rely on their parents. Parents spend a large amount of money sending children abroad to study and live, placing high hopes on them. Some parents hope children to finish school early and return to China to repay the society and parents. And some parents hope children to marry and settle down early. Pressure from many aspects makes them feel very hard to live.
Miss Yan , who is working in America, said that given the current social circumstances, females that haven’t got married till 30 years old were considered as “spinsters”. However, it is very common for 30-year-old American females being unmarried because of study and work. Relatively speaking, domestic social circumstances give much pressure to unmarried females. Many overseas returnees bear too much social pressure in marriage. She also said that when she returned China not long ago, she invisibly received various pressures from her family.
Graduating from University of Southern California, Xie Yun was born in 1981. She has been working here for 3 years. Busy work and narrow social life make her have no chance to find a suitable marriage partner. According to her statement, her parents almost discussed this problem with her every day. But she thought fate cannot demand. If she returns to China, she doesn’t know how to face pressure from parents and relatives.
Honoring parents is the traditional virtues of Chinese. One of the reasons for only child overseas students to return to China is that they want to reward parents for their bringing up. But it often means giving up the lifestyle children like and sacrificing themselves. Born in 1980, Miss Zhang chose to return to China two years ago. She gave up the job in California, because her parents want her to stay with them. She doesn’t like domestic lifestyle, but she has no choice.
