Older vehicles usually had a simple light on the vehicle's dashboard, while newer vehicles have more complicated display & have more specialized error messages. Sensors are battery operated and transmit the information to the vehicles computer by a weak radio signal and by activating the warning indicator lights on the vehicles dash board that would notify the driver if there is a 25% drop in tire pressure levels. Some more advanced systems will display the actual pressure of each tire in real time, allowing the driver to be fully aware of the state of inflation. A fully inflated tire reduces the undue wear on the rubber and also improves fuel efficiency, making the TPMS system an important part of your Car. A loss of as little as 10 percent of the tire's recommended pressure reduces gas mileage by approximately one percent on average.
Tire pressure is monitored through one of two methods: direct or indirect. Direct TPMS monitors the actual air pressure inside each tire via a sensor mounted within the tire. Indirect TPMS measures tire pressure by monitoring the speed and rotation of each individual wheel. When a significant variation in speed and rotation is detected in one or more wheels when compared with the others, it is often an indication of under-inflation. This information is then transmitted to the vehicle's on-board computer, and the driver is alerted. If your Car is above five years, the tire sensors may failing as each sensor has a self-contained battery which can experience a shorter lifespan due to road hazards so in these cases, replacing the sensors corrects the issue. The system may need resetting once the new sensors are installed to ensure that the monitoring system properly receives information from the new sensors after replacement. A corroded valve stem, which also serves as the sensor transmitter's antenna, will affect the transmission of the TPMS data from the sensor to the ECU and may result in the TPMS light to illuminate.
Vehicle owners needing to reset the system should check the owner's manual for their vehicle in order to determine the proper reset procedure. Each manufacturer has a different system in place for resetting the TPMS. The simplest reset involves driving on the tires for five to ten minutes. Other methods for resetting involves pressing and holding a reset button or using a combination of key presses on the key fob to reset the system.
Most often, the loss of pressure in a tire involves a puncture in the tire's tread. Occasionally the problem lies elsewhere, such as the bead separating from the rim and allowing air to escape. Sometimes the solution is as simple as putting the spare tire in place, but this does not always resolve the situation.
However, while TPMS systems offers much increased safety levels to drivers through low pressure warnings and they are not meant to be a substitute for proper tire pressure maintenance.
