More often than not fragrances you wear define your personality and your mood. And, with a multitude of variety we seldom can make up our minds to choose one without getting confused. It’s important to get an understanding of which fragrance family the scent belongs to and what fragrances you prefer. To make it easier for you to understand, choose and buy new fragrances you'll love to wear; we have looked around the different types of perfumes and few basic tips of perfume buying.
Fragrances could be categorized as:
• Oriental: Sensual, exotic and spicy is the only way to describe this type of perfumes. These sensual blends are distinctly feminine and often have a mysterious, bold, animalistic charm to it. Orientals are more intense and long lasting group of fragrances.
Examples of Orientals could be the classic Opium by Yves Saint Laurent, Obsession by Calvin Klein, Violet Angel by Thierry Mugler, Elizabeth Taylor Black Pearls, Guerlain L'Heure Bleue, or the Crystal Noir by Versace.
• Romantic: Very feminine, floral and smooth describes the romantic perfumes just right. These sweet scents are usually a combination of scents of delicate flowers to create the classic feminine appeal. They are very appropriate for ‘good girls’ visiting church, the ballet, or best friend’s wedding or other social occasions.
Examples of romantic perfumes could be the quintessential classic Chanel N5, Estee Lauder Beautiful, Vera Wang, Christina Aguilera fragrance etc.
• Refreshing: The first thing that comes to mind is citrus and that’s exactly the predominant scent in such perfumes. This bunch of perfumes is citrus scented often, but also offers natural refreshing scents like sparkling aromas of soft breezes, fresh air, oceanic scents. This kind of fragrances are characterised by their crisp, energizing and light but yet long lasting nature.
Examples of refreshing perfumes could be Christian Dior's Dune, Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers, Davidoff Cool Water Woman, Calvin Klein Summer, Giorgio Beverly Hills Ocean Dream, D&G Light Blue etc.
• Woody: Woody scents usually have base notes of bark and moss, conjuring winding forest paths. While more unisex perfumes than other fragrance categories, these woody scents evoke a particular sense of no-nonsense femininity. These have a musky feel and are often chosen for corporate wear because of their classic appeal.
Examples of woody scents could be Pure Turquoise from Ralph Lauren, Estee Lauder Knowing, Britney Spears Believe, Ralph Lauren Romance, or Chanel No.19 with notes of leather & musk.
• Gourmand: Associated with sweeter notes, gourmand fragrances are food inspired. They have food-flavored aromas, such as coffee, cupcake, whiskey, chocolate, almond, vanilla, and even cotton candy. Be it sweet or spicy, these aromas possess a certain relaxing, nourishing qualities. Examples of gourmand scents could be Angel by Thierry Mugler, Vanilla Ice Cream Fragrance by Jessica Simpson, Delicious Cotton Candy Perfume by Gale Hayman, 212 Sexy Perfume by Carolina Herrera, Aquolina Chocolovers perfume etc.
• Fruity: These perfumes are fresh and spicy, just like nice girls with a wicked side! The predominant notes are inspired from fruits with an undeniable aroma like the bright and familiar smells of apple, peach, berry, mango and other juicy fruits.
Examples of fruity fragrances could be including Liz Claiborne, Victoria's Secret Very Sexy, Harajuku Lovers Lil' Angel, Viva la Juicy by Juicy Couture, Marc Jacobs Splash: Apple 2010, DKNY Delicious, Ralph Lauren Ralph Wild among others.
Now that we know how fragrances can be grouped, here are 3 tips to keep in mind while checking out perfumes:
1. Decide the occasion: To avoid getting confused over which kind of perfume to buy, you must first decide for which occasion you need the perfume. Depending on your occasion you may choose the category or type of scent and finally the brand or the perfume precisely.
2. Sampling: People have a habit of spraying the perfume tester and sniffing it immediately. This in reality doesn’t give the right sense of how the fragrance will smell on you because scents bloom differently on different body types. So best way to sample a perfume is spray on your wrist, wait for a minute till it dries and then smell. Do not rub it.
3. Final item check: Every time you buy a perfume, make sure you check the final item to ensure that the caps are tight and in place. Often due to the fragility of the bottles and long transportations, caps crack and perfumes vaporize which means you don’t get what you buy. So check next time!
Hope the perfume grouping and the 3 basic tips would help you buy your choicest perfume next time.
