Deciding to hire a contractor for pressure washing needs is a major decision. Pressure washing is not a universal cleaning method that will fix anything so careful consideration must be made when thinking about exactly what needs to be cleaned. Some common methods of pressure washing include water blasting, sand blasting, soda blasting and dry ice blasting. Dry Ice Blasting has become the most popular method of pressure washing because it is non abrasive, evaporates immediately, requires no secondary cleanup and is non-toxic.
However, even dry ice blasting can prove to be an inferior attempt to clean if the correct method is not chosen. Choosing the right dry ice blasting company is a task to be taken seriously because not every contractor will have the methods that you need to ensure the safety of your objects being cleaned.
The following items should be considered when choosing to hire a dry ice blasting company:
Credibility, equipment, products, methods and price.
The first suggestion is to ask about their certifications. If you are hiring a contractor to do your pressure washing, they should have appropriate contractors requirements for the state that they’re doing the work in. If the dry ice blasting company knows what they’re doing, they should know what requirements they need and be able to show them to you upon request. In having expertise of their trade, they should also have expertise in the products and services they offer.
Ask about what kind of dry ice they are using as well as the kinds of machines for each job. Continental Carbonic sells their dry ice by measuring it at the very last minute in order to maximize the volume of it. If your dry ice blasting company is buying an inferior product they will more than likely offer an inferior service. Also, what kinds of dry ice pellets are they using? If they are using anything larger than 1/8 inch sized pellets then they could be damaging your surface or reducing productivity (especially if you’re paying by the hour).
Dry Ice Pellets used on a high pressure blaster are excellent for removing grime, oils, mold, and weld slag. The process of blasting dry ice to these surfaces attacks the surface of the contaminant with the pellets through a hose at a high speed and breaks it apart while evaporating at the surface of the object.
However, dry ice pellet blasting is also not the universal method to cleaning surfaces. One method called Block Shaving grinds the dry ice into a finer grain like a flaky snow. This kind of blasting is ideal for thin surfaces to be cleaned and even glass. Although this method is much slower, it also is less impacting on the blast to surfaces which is good for more fragile objects being cleaned.
Most importantly, shop around- Don’t get ripped off by the first pressure washing company that you happen to come across. Consider the costs of what it would take to have a dry ice blasting contractor come and clean up your objects. If the objects being dry ice blasted are small and tough enough to withstand pressure washing, consider renting a dry ice blaster to do the work yourself. However, it might be recommended for much larger and delicate jobs to have a professional and experienced contractor take care of the work for you.
Understand the cleaning methods of the objects that you need cleaned need to be carefully considered in order to get the most of your money as well as the continued use of your equipment being cleaned.
