Purchasing a firearm online is easier than a person may think. This day and age almost anything can be done on a computer with the internet, whether buying clothes, toys, electronics or firearms.
When buying a firearm online there are still many rules and regulations that have to be followed to insure the proper person(s) is receiving the correct item that was purchased. Even if a firearm is purchased online the proper paperwork has to be completed by someone with a Federal Firearms License (FFL) and proper verification that the individual can legally possess said firearm. Federal regulations state that a person has to be 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or shotgun and 21 years of age to purchase a handgun of any type. Every state has different laws and regulations that a local dealer can explain to you if you have any questions about them.
Use these simple steps below for the how-to on how to purchase a firearm on the internet and make it as simple as possible for you (the purchaser) and for the seller.
STEP ONE
Contact a local dealer and make arrangements for them to conduct the transfer (receive the firearm for you) so they can complete the proper paperwork. Make sure that they are aware of the type of firearm that will be sent to them on your behalf, and that they ensure this firearm is acceptable and legal in your state/county of residence. Be aware that there may be fees associated with the transfer by your local dealer and you have agreed to pay this amount prior to the order being placed.
STEP TWO
Place the order for the firearm of your choosing. You can purchase firearms from a number of places including online websites and auction sites that specialize in firearms and accessories. Make sure you are aware of all guidelines and restrictions before agreeing to purchase any firearm. Payment should be made to the seller, payment type will vary from seller to seller but credit cards, money orders, cashier’s checks, and sometimes personal checks (with a waiting period) are normally accepted. Make sure to research these options before purchasing any firearm.
STEP THREE
Have your local dealer fax or email a complete copy of their Federal Firearms License (FFL) to the store/individual you purchased the firearm from. You should make sure the dealer includes your name and any information pertaining to the firearm with the FFL. Without this information the seller may not know what item the Federal Firearms License (FFL) is for and it may delay the processing of the firearm from being shipped to you in a timely manner.
STEP FOUR
Once you have paid for your firearm and the dealer/individual has received proper paperwork it will be shipped to your dealer. Some shipping choices include UPS, FedEx, or USPS depending on the seller’s preferences. Long guns are usually shipped ground unless specified otherwise and extra shipping paid, however handguns must be shipped overnight or 2nd day air. You may or may not be provided tracking information on your item this is up to the dealer’s discretion and method of shipping. Make sure you’re dealer has your contact info so they can let you know when your firearm arrives and is ready to be picked up. There will be paperwork to fill out when the firearm is picked up so be prepared with the proper identification and permits if required to make for a smoother transfer process. Check your local and state laws to see if there is any sort of waiting period for your item.
Hopefully this information was helpful to you for buying a firearm online. This is an easy way of finding the exact firearm you are looking for without the wait of a local dealer to get one in their shop. Some dealers are unable to get certain firearms that others may already have, so enjoy looking on the internet to find the firearm you have been dreaming about.
