The summer season is the ideal occasion for having fun while the kids are home for a few months. It can get expensive taking them places that cost tons of money just to get in such as theme parks. If you happen to be in the same predicament as most Americans are, don't fret, since there are many money-saving fun things to do at home. These fun things to do are ideal for children under 10 years old. Many of these suggestions are focused around learning activities together.
How Regular Household Items Can Be Used in Your Games
Use everyday items in your play around the house as props for your pretend news stories. An entertaining thing to do at home is to imagine that you run an emergency room or doctor's office. Have the kids gather a stuffed toy or other toy and then use things from around your home that can serve as pretend surgical instruments. Most houses are chock full of oddly-shaped utensils that can be imagined into medical instruments. You can also do another take on this game by setting up a mock news reporting studio for television. A Teddy bear or other toys can be used as part of the creative storylines that you and your child are describing to the imaginary viewers.
Enjoy a Pretend African Outdoor Experience
An activity that is a favorite among kids is to pretend that you're on a safari trip in your living room. Gather some extra large bed linens and tie the ends into chairs, the sofa, or to anything in the room that will hold steadily. Cover the bed linens so that thekids feel like they are hiding in a canopy forest or in the thick brush where the wild animals can't see them. If you have a pair of binoculars, take them out to enhance the game. Have your kids gather all of the stuffed animals and critter figures they can find and set them up throughout the room, partly hidden so you can only see their heads, and then use the binoculars to peek on them. Once the kids find each animal, shout out the sound that the animal makes. They always have big fun with this game!
Bring the Fun Outdoors
Another inexpensive, yet really active thing to do is to get out side for a ride on road bikes. If you have little ones, you can include them in a trailer attachment where they can be safe in a secure area. For shorter distances, some children might want to use their scooter to get through the ride. To make it even more interesting, take your time and call out different items for them to spot while you're out, like a treasure hunt. Things like birds, flowers, or squirrels can all be great things for everyone to call out as they discover them. This game also works wonderfully on a nature walk and can help kids learn about nature and their environment.
Things to Do After the Sun Sets
When night falls, the fun doesn't have to stop there! Set up a tent in the back of your house along with binoculars for star gazing. If you have a place where you can safely make a fire or a small charcoal barbeque, you can make a wood fire for them. Have the kids get together some tree branches for toasting s'mores. If you have several free days this summer, go camping at a nature preserve or forest and extend your time enjoying nature! These suggestions will surely give you and your little ones some much-deserved entertainment, family time, and creativity.
