Of course, eBooks, apps and web have become the part of student’s daily lives. But, we can’t deny the negative effects of too much of screen time. While these innovations offer a range of benefits, people have started to realise the importance of screen-free spaces. In fact, there’s a growing demand for well-designed, organised, and user-friendly libraries in schools.

Never before has it been more important to offer students a place where they can disconnect from the technological advancement engulfing most of their time. No matter how much eBooks and apps are introduced, nothing can beat the physical library. That said, the real challenge lies in making the library fitouts relevant modern school design that enhance the reading experience.

Here are a few tips for designing a modern school library:-

Flexible space

Many schools are forced into stagnate teaching methods as their library doesn’t have flexible instructional spaces. You wouldn’t want to let that happen to your school library. Be it library fitouts or classroom fitouts, it should be designed with flexibility in mind. Students must learn to formulate a question, appreciate multiple viewpoints, and use a range of resources in their research.

Plus, modern learners demonstrate their understandings in new ways, such as producing videos or presentations. That’s why every school library must have a flexible learning space with comfortable and flexible school joinery that supports multiple learning and teaching styles. Learning models are changing, and school libraries need to take the lead.

Think out of box

Remember, you are not running a book warehouse and merchandising. The library should be more attractive and more visible to students by taking advantage of displays, mobile fixtures, signage, and lighting. One of the best ways to provide a variety of usable environments within the library is to section spaces into defined zones with specific purposes. Also, allocate carefully chosen areas where students can browse on their devices with limited screen time.

However, allow designated spaces where devices are restricted. Moreover, think about how to provide cosy spaces for individual reading and offer soundproof meeting rooms for collaborative work. The division of zones is an excellent idea as it gives the students an opportunity to think creatively.

Don’t compromise liveability over beauty

A school library shouldn’t be designed with aesthetic in mind. It has to inspire students to read and learn more. The library should be designed in such a way that is energising, inspiring, motivating, and inviting that allows students to be busy gathering information and exchanging ideas.
