When designing the graphics for a new trade show display, many people like to base their layout on the brochures they already have and will be handing out at their next event anyway. This is typically not a good idea as you will only have a few seconds to get your main message across with graphics, meaning words are not the most effective way to communicate. Also, many booths are designed to have someone stationed at them at all times to answer questions, and most exhibitors are sure to hand out their brochures at some point in the conversation
If you are handing out brochures and have someone stationed at the booth to answer questions, it may become very repetitive and distracting to fill your booth with the same content that is already available to your audience. It's going to be the best to use some of the more important points from the brochure (if any) and focus on comforting and supportive imagery. Imagery will be much more effective and inviting to your audience, bringing in more people in a way that a lot of text and changing focus points cannot.
Brochures can be a good starting point for style and focus, but they should be used with caution when designing a display such as a pop-up or banner. Because it is easy to simply copy the content from the brochure to the booth, this might seem like a quick solution. However, many times it will result in a poor design that will not pull in customers like an exclusively-designed trade show booth display is able to do.
One of the biggest issues for customers working with large format printing is gathering images large enough to professionally represent their company on a 10' popup display. An image for the entire background will need to be 10’ wide by 7’ tall. This is very difficult to obtain for most companies but it's not impossible. If a company is interested in a retractable banner stand and wants the image to be the entire width of the display, they only need an image that is 34 inches wide. This is much easier to find.
It is always best to use images from within the company – whether they have been simply photographed by an employee or hired out by a professional photographer. A company's own images will always best represent what they do and can showcase their previous work. If images are not available from within the company, it is best to purchase images off of a stock library such as (but not limited to) istockphoto.com or shutterstock.com. Although customers will have to purchase the images on these sites, they are typically professionally taken and depending on the site can be relatively inexpensive to purchase. Once purchased, they can also be used for future marketing projects (providing there are no license restrictions).
