Some people are born with the ability to cook (figuratively speaking, please don’t let your child anywhere near a stove, haha!), they love to cook, they see cooking as a fun thing to do and develop a passion for it. For others however, they are naturally the tasters. No matter which side of that fence you fall on, at one point we will be eventually find ourselves in a situation where we have to cook even though we might not know how to cook as well. Below are some tips that would be the basis for you to follow if there is a time you have to cook.
The first tip is the balance between your diet and your money. Cheap meals do not necessarily have to mean unhealthy meals. Make the most use out of some simple but effective techniques such as shopping just an hour before the closing time of the supermarket or on Saturday or Sunday nights, you will the whole different in price. Now of course that depends on where you may shop, a local place often has heavily discounted goods within the first hour of opening on Saturday morning. Buy those exceptional food deals and use your freezer to store them. Avoid buying snacks or junk food although they are nice to eat but do not have any nutrition in it, besides the cost of them is expensive also. Focus on energy foods which has a lot of Carbohydrates such as rice and pasta since it will help you have enough energy to go through the day. Please keep in mind that over the last little while, the word ‘carbs’ have taken a lot of flack and gained a highly negative connotation. This is not the case! Carbs are great, they break down into glucose which is NEEDED for brain functionality. They provide you with energy, among other things. Trust me when I say this, they are not the enemy. There are different types of carbs as well, I always recommend you keep your sugar intake low, let’s keep those insulin spikes to a minimum and your waistline will thank you. I could go off on a lengthy dissertation about the benefits of carbs and explain in detail why you can actually have carbs after 6pm, but I’ll save that for another article. Please! Eat up! Of course the old adage ‘everything in moderation’ is highly applicable here. The second kind of food you need to focus on is the one with high protein such as fish or chicken, even soy for you vegetarians out there. Again, the endless benefits of maintaining at least some type of protein in your diet should be saved for another article. If you ever get tired of those, substitute with eggs, another great ‘superfood’. It has a great amino acid profile in its protein as well as healthy fats, another thing that needs to be in your diet. For those of you that may be worried about its cholesterol content, eat, eat and eat! Dietary cholesterol has NOT been linked to blood cholesterol or known to increase your LDL levels, also known as ‘bad cholesterol’. Use your money to buy the right foods to eat is the key to budget your meal.
Let’s not forget about the importance of other mineral and vitamins. You can easily support your body these essential mineral with cheap vegetables and fruits or through wholesome foods like milk. Chow these fruits between your big meals as a snack and that will guarantee great taste and healthy eating habits. Have fun with it, get creative and memorize some recipes of different foods from different cuisines if you do not want to eat the same type of food all the time. Browse through RecipeLoft.com to get some ideas, gourmet eating doesn’t have to be expensive. Another thing you should to keep in mind is the cleanliness of your kitchen, your food can be all healthy you want but if the environment of cooking is so dirty then the result is not so different to eat unhealthy food. Eating the food that has been cooked from these dirty kitchens can make you sick, so remember to clean your kitchen whenever you are done with the cooking.
Again, cooking might not be a fun thing for some people but if you are forced to have to live away from your family and there is no one to cook for you, then remember to keep these tips in mind, cook well, eat well and live well! You’ll be thankful you did!
