Timing is of the essence when it comes to bagging a bargain. Knowing when to purchase the stuff that you need shaves off precious dollars from prices. Manufacturers and retail outlets schedule their promos and seasonal sales during a particular time of month or year. Purchasing in accordance with these schedules can result to savings that can otherwise be used for pleasurable pursuits such as vacations or can be set aside for an emergency fund.
Drag your Feet, Drain your Wallet
When it comes to bargain hunting, the adage “The early bird catches the worm,” applies. If you are travelling during the holidays for instance, airline tickets for are usually a lot cheaper the earlier you book. It is especially difficult to get a good deal during the holiday season so it is best to plan early and purchase your travel tickets way ahead of time. For non-holiday travel, three months from the date of departure is a good schedule to go by.
Weddings also benefit from early booking, preferably at least six months to a year before the wedding date. The thing about weddings is that there are so many elements that you have to manage – the wedding planner, the caterers, the venue and so on. Booking early will save you money plus eliminate the headache of having to juggle so many schedules at once. Since a lot of couples get engaged at Christmas, wedding planners increase their prices during this time, so make sure you get an agreement on pricing before this time.
Buying by Month
Certain purchases should be reserved for the months of the year when they are likely to be on sale. A good rule of thumb is, buy the things that you need when the demand for them is low. For example, if your air conditioning unit needs replacing, wait until the winter season to get a new one. During the summer, when it is hot and humid, many people buy air conditioners so manufacturers and retailers increase prices during this time. Come winter, sales is slow so they attract customers by lowering prices.
School supplies usually go on sale around two months before school starts so it is a good idea to start stocking up on your children’s educational needs by July or August. It’s highly unlikely that you’ll get good prices for supplies if you start shopping say, two weeks from the start of school.
General Guidelines
When you are out shopping, take note that vendors are usually more willing to negotiate on prices as they are about to close. This is true for many retail outlets as well as other bargain-friendly places such as flea markets. Flea market vendors aim to get rid of all the items in their inventory and would rather not haul any more stuff back home. A sale is better than no sale.
Sales usually also abound just before the holidays. As retailers prepare to bring in the latest inventory for the holidays and for the upcoming year, they want to get rid of all the items from the previous year so they mark down their prices.
