One day a professor stood before his class holding a large empty jar and some pieces of rocks, which were of about 2” diameter. The professor filled the jar up to the neck with the rocks and then asked the students, whether the jar was filled up or not. All the students replied ‘yes’. Then the professor took out some pebbles from the drawer and stuffed these into the jar. The professor shook the jar slightly and the pebbles rolled into the empty areas of the jar. He again asked the students whether the jar was filled up or not, and the answer was the same.

The professor then took a box of sand and started pouring it into the jar. The sand filled up all the empty areas of the jar, leaving no room for anything else. The professor again asked the same question and this time also the answer was the same. The professor then said, “I want you all to recognize that this is our life. Here the jar represents the time in which we have to fit all our works. The rocks are the most important things, the pebbles are less important ones and the sand is the least important ones. If we filled up the jar first with the sand, there wouldn’t be any room for the rocks or the pebbles.

So always remember to give preference to the most important works and segment the work according to the preference. Take care of the rocks first; the things that really matters. Set your priorities; the rest is just pebbles and sand”. It is the law of nature that we get 24 hours of time in a day. No one or nothing can increase this time limit. So it is very important for us to learn the skills of managing our time according to the preference. Following a proper routine is also necessary to lead a life of worthiness. When we are young, our parents and family members teach us about the importance and strategies of managing the time.

Some of the tips to teach kids how to manage their time are briefly discussed below:-

1. Preparing a planner or calendar with enough space to note down the school assignment, projects and other important works of your child can be a good way of managing the time. You can also ask your child to help you out in preparing the chart so that they can be interested in the work.

2. The second important thing is to be a role model. Children learn things from their elders by observing them. so always try to put a good example of time management before them.

3. Give your child ample time to enjoy free play. This is of vital importance in the developmental process of a child.

4. Teach your child the art of multitasking. At first they may find difficulties, but gradually they will become used to this.

5. Let children have a schedule for everything from homework, household chores, play time and extra-curricular activities. This will help your kids understand the value of being efficient and being able to have good grades at school.

Time management is a skill that we require in every step of our life, whether it is our professional or personal life. So prepare your child for the new dawn by empowering them with the skill of time management.
