The first kidney transplantation of human being was done in 1950. The organ donation has started to become a major public issue in the middle of 1960s. It accelerated with experimental transplantation of human organs when Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed first human heart transplantation in 1967 in South Africa. After this, most subsequent heart transplants done until 1975, but the patient survived only few weeks or months because of the rejection of transplanted organ. As a result, hospitals in many countries stopped the cardiac transplantation.
However, in early 1980 this problem had been largely removed by the development of drugs to suppress the immune system. At this point, heart transplant clinics were gradually restored in hospitals throughout the western world. Also it started in other parts of the world also and made many successful transplantation. What is the big question to be considered as a donor? No doubt, the big question for anybody to consider is that the definition of brain death. This happens when doctors determined that, as a seriously ill or injured person who is brain dead and there is no prospect of saving the life. Since the advent of transplant surgery, has expressed concern about the ethics of the concept of brain death as a reliable indicator of death. It is also the added dilemma of the body organs to be removed while the donor heart is still beating. For example, the organs like kidneys and liver and heart to be in the best shape possible for the receiver, the heart must maintain the functioning of the body as long as possible so that these organs are removed.
In general, the patient is anesthetized during the process of organ harvesting, because the brain death is sometimes not sufficient to prevent the suffering of the donor overall. Some surgeons have expressed doubts about this process in the past. There is also concern that doctors leave the intensive care unit as soon as the donor too, so that the recipient can enjoy. As a donor, you can determine if you are agreeing with the procedure for the removal of internal organs upon death. From my own perspective, I decided to become an organ donor, because it can save a person’s life even after our death.
