Getting Things Set
Packing is the most important factor when it comes to moving homes. After all, how you pack determines how you will move. Learning to compartmentalize your things and belongings will help you in the move and when it comes to unpacking as well.
Before you start tossing your things into bags and boxes, you should start by analyzing what storages you have available and what items you intend to move. The next step is grouping your things accordingly so that they will fit properly and safely into the storages you have.
Do not hesitate to purchase or buy additional storage if you think that your storage are insufficient for shipping your belongings. Also, do not think twice of selling or donating away things that you do not plan on using anymore. These will not only make the move harder, but will also become unnecessary clutter in your new home. The best advantage of a new home is that you get to start anew with your living space; there is no need to bring old junk into your new home.
Sorting Out what is Needed and what is not
The first thing to sort for almost everyone is the closet. Clothes tend to accumulate over time; particularly for clothes that either get damaged or stained, or simply get really old. While one cannot dispute the importance of nostalgia and the memories included in the clothes, it is far more practical to simply write down your memories on a journal or to just cut the tag or label from your old clothes and dispose of the clothes themselves.
You can even turn this into an activity; compile the cutouts into a scrapbook that you can always look back into. The given rule for clothes is that you should dispose of clothes that you have not worn in over a year. This rule is also important for old underwear. For hygiene purposes, underwear should be replaced every now and then.
Other items that are difficult to throw away are old media such as VHS tapes and cassettes. While some of these items should be kept for entertainment and monetary value, other recordings such as copies of re-runs and tapings of family events are better off transferred into digital format. This will not only let you keep your videos, but also free you with a lot of space since media in digital format can be kept in more compact storages.
Disposing of Your Extra Things
You should make the disposal of old items part of your moving preparations. This will save you a lot of time and energy especially during the busy time you will have once the actual move begins. So the question now remains, where does your old stuff go? Old toys can be donated to your local animal shelter. Old books can easily find home in book drives. If you choose to have a yard sale, price items to be sold, not for profit. This is because you intend to have your old stuff disposed. Getting money for it is only a side benefit. Follow these tips and you will have an easier time moving home!
