The main thing in writing a thesis is to make a hypothesis and then to confirm the hypothesis. All the arrangements are necessary for confirming the hypothesis. Different methods like sampling technique, data collection methods and different analytical methods are used to arrive at a conclusion regarding the hypothesis.
A hypothesis may be directly or indirectly confirmable. It is confirmed directly if some observation or experiment can test it. The hypothesis that coffee taken at night makes a man sleepless can be tested by giving coffee at night to a number of people a number of times and observing its effect upon them. Where we cannot confirm a hypothesis directly we may test it indirectly by verifying the consequences derivable from it or we may examine the validity of its opposite consequences. This will be made clear by an example. The law of Gravitation is not directly observable, but if it is true, heavy things must fall. An aero plane doesn’t fall, but an aero plane uses some special device to stay in air; there fore the law of gravitation is true. Again if we want to know what the effect of moral education upon man is, and we have a hypothesis that moral education produces induction, we will have to see how a man without moral education acts in comparison with a man with moral education when confronted with a chance of premarital sex adultery, taking job etc.
A study of Cohen and Nagel,” A study of what is involved in making observation will enable us to offer the coup de grace to the utterly misleading view that knowledge can be advanced by merely collecting facts.” The following difficulties or short comings in observation make it unreliable for confirmation of hypothesis:
1) Observation itself requires hypothesis for interpretation of sensations and perceptions.
2) The observation may be erroneous.
3) The hypothesis which directs observation also determines in large measure what factors in the subject matter are noted. There fore, the observation is unreliable and even worthless unless its conditions are known.
4) Since scientific observations are carried on by the aid of instruments, the nature and limitations of such instruments must be known.
The function of hypothesis is to search fact, where the term fact “denotes those things exciting in space or time, together with the relations between them, in virtue of which a proposition is true.” The above limitations of observation are equally applicable to experiment though to a lesser degree. As regards the claim of what is known as crucial experiment to verify a hypothesis. Cohen and Nagel have pointed out, “Crucial experiments, we must conclude, are crucial against a hypothesis only if there is a stable set of assumptions which we do not wish to abandon. But no guarantee can be given, for reasons we have stated, that some portions of such assumptions will never be surrendered.”
