Questions and Answers to Aging
The story of growth hormone is still being written. As mentioned before in Rudman groundbreaking study inspired the National institute of Aging in 1992 to conduct nine clinical trials on so called trophic factors that will take five years to complete. Six of these focus specifically on growth hormone or growth hormone-releasing hormone. At the Hopkins University Medical Center is looking at Gh and sex steroids in restoring a number of aspects that decline with age. Dr. Andrew Hoffman at Stanford University Medical Center is testing the metabolic effects of GH and a related hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in healthy older women and also studying whether these substances might enhance the effects of an exercise program; a Doctor at Washington Harbor view Medical Center is evaluating the effects in older women of growth hormone-releasing hormone when used alone or in combination with endurance or strength training; David MacLean of Rhode Island Hospital is testing whether Gh and exercise have a synergistic action in improving muscle performance in older men and women; and Stephen Well, at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is examining the mechanism of muscle atrophy.
Using strength training growth hormone injections, or both on muscle atrophy. Two other studies, by Joyce Tenover at Emory University School of Medicine, and by Peter Snyder at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, are seeing whether testosterone replacement in older men improves age-related declines in muscle mass, strength, bone density, and cognitive function. Yet another study by Michael Kleerekoper, M.D, is looking at the effectiveness of hormone replacement therapy in women in preventing bone loss in the lower leg that is usually involved in hip fracture.
These are unprecedented, potentially historic, studies because they are not looking at the effects of aging in fruit flies, worms, fish, mice, and rats, but are examining actual interventions in elderly men and women. And unlike studies at the other National Institutes of Health, which focus on specific various diseases, these will zero in on the effects of the aging process itself. “The National Institute on Aging’s mandate is to conduct research with the aim of improving the quality of life and maintaining the independence and vitality of people well into their later years.” The results of these studies should go a long way to fulfilling that mandate.
