I’m sure every lover of Urdu would agree that Urdu is the sweetest all languages. It’s easy to learn, calming to speak and soothing to hear. The language which many believe to be a combination of Persian, Turkish and Arabic has evolved over time. Prose (Kahani) and poetry (Shayri) are perhaps the best gift that Urdu has given to its lovers. The Poet Maikash Kashmiri, echoes this sentiment beautifully, with this couplet,
Only in this language will I talk to God,
Urdu will be my tongue even on the Judgment Day
Urdu poetry is usually expressed through ghazals, qasidas, marsiyas, masnavis, tazkiras, nazms and the now popular tarannums. Sher-o-Shayri has been propagated since ancient times, through mushairas. A mushaira is an intimate affair where poets and connoisseurs of the Urdu language gathered together and shared their thought through poetry. In Mughal times, mushairas usually stuck to a common theme, or a fixed rhyme scheme. Guests were expected to deliver Shayris, keeping in mind the fixed rhyme scheme. Today, mushairas don’t usually stick to a fixed rhyme scheme; instead mix many forms of poetry that includes subject that vary from lewd jokes, political satire and love. A Shayari that finds acceptance among the crowd is reciprocated with roars of ‘Vah...Vah...Vah’ which is the traditional way of heaping accolades on a poet.
However connoisseurs of Urdu’s high literacy culture, lament that the language has fallen prey to the fast life that we lead. Youngsters today lead a fast paced life with little or no time to attend mushairas. For youngsters, not in tune with the mushaira culture can express their love for the language through the internet. There are several Pakistani forums where Pakistanis from all over the world can share their love for Urdu Kahani and Shayri. These forums offer a platform for Urdu lovers to share Shayri SMS, love Shayri, Sher- o- Shayri, sad Shayri, and Shayri on dosti and ghazal. Besides this these forums offer to send greeting cards to loved ones and also offer chat rooms where likeminded Pakistanis can share their thoughts and ideas.
These chat rooms have managed to break the common misconception that Pakistanis aren’t open to thoughts other than religion. A large number of Pakistanis especially the younger generation have embraced the internet and used these forums to propagate their love for the Urdu language. The Shayari and Kahani sessions are popular not only with Pakistanis but also find acceptance among the large Indian audience who are lovers of the language.
