The metabolic functions of growth hormone are not limited to the early years of growth and development but continue to exert the same level of influence into old age.
Growth Hormone enhances the movement of amino acids through out the cellular membranes into the cell. Proteins are the building blocks for all of the amino acids in the human body. Growth hormone also enhances the ability of the cells to synthesize and manufacture amino acids. It promotes growth and repair within the cell itself if adequate levels of energy, amino acids and vitamins are present. Growth hormone causes a decrease in the breakdown of cellular protein for energy. It really mobilizes fat from the fatty tissue, which is used for energy, in this way sparing protein as a source of energy. Growth hormone’s influence on protein metabolism is almost instantaneous.

As it was stated before above growth hormone makes the fatty tissue to release stored fatty acids, which are then preferentially metabolized or burned for energy. Under the influence of growth hormone the body burns fat in preference to proteins and carbohydrates. Growth hormone has a number of effects on the cellular metabolism of glucose, the primary carbohydrate in the body that is used as a fuel. Hgh decreases the utilization of glucose for energy in the cell and increases the formation and deposition of a substance called glycogen in the cell. Glycogen is the storage form of glucose that is stored within the cell, especially the cells of muscle and the liver, and can be moved for quick energy, This may be due in part to the increased use of fatty acids for energy, which may cause the cell to shut down the process in which glucose is converted into energy. Growth hormone also has the ability to increase the secretion of insulin from the pancreas and causes a mild insulin resistance, which decreases the uptake of glucose by the cell. The mild insulin resistance is temporary and allows growth hormone to limit the muscle use of glucose as a fuel and increase the use of fatty acids for fuel.

The metabolic functions of growth hormone are not limited to the early years of growth and development but continue to exert the same level of influence into old age. Growth hormone has a profound effect on tissue growth and fuel mobilization. It does this through its influence on all three of the major macromolecules of human metabolism: proteins, fats and carbohydrates in the form of glucose.
