The rebellious and arrogant behavior of a child has become a major issue for most parents nowadays. Other than becoming a real problem for the parents to handle such defiance, it also affects the overall mental health of the child. Child behavior problems can be classified as Reactive attachment disorder, Oppositional defiant disorder, psychosocial disorders, habit disorders and many more.
Reactive attachment disorder (RAD)
The unsocial behavior of a child is often a matter of worry for most parents. Reactive attachment disorder basically happens because of prolonged negligence and ignorance of the parents during the development stage of the child. Lack of proper attention of the parents towards the child’s basic emotional requirements and physical safety are two of the primary reasons for this problem. Other than this, inadequate bondage with the primary or secondary caregiver also makes a child lonesome and unsocial. Children suffering from attachment disorders are insecure, arrogant and prefer to stay alone.
Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
Though ODD is also a typical behavioral disorder and is very much similar to RAD, yet there is a thin-line difference between the two. Unlike RAD, Oppositional defiant disorder starts when kids are toddlers and have gone through major disruptions in relationship building with their parents and friends. The child is aggressive, defiant, rebellious and ignores everyone who tries to teach them. Though the core reason for this problem is still unknown, yet, most psychiatrists feel that it happens because of improper parenting. It is considered to be a normal continuation of developmental issues that were not properly solved during the development stage of the child.
Psychosocial disorders
A child’s behavioral disorder is affected by a number of causes that include problems during developmental stage, temperament, adaptive abilities, prolonged stress and many more. A kid suffering from chronic stress is more difficult to handle than a stress happening from a past stressful event. Psychosocial disorders basically arise from social circumstances. Though the child may not react to a stressful event immediately, but it does affect the mental health of the kid. Under this disorder, a child suffers from chronic stressful problems like sleeping disorders, anxiety and depression, prolonged mental problems as well as feeding problems. However, proper anticipatory guidance like preparing the child for an approaching stressful event may often work out.
Habit Disorders
A very common child behavior problem is the habit disorder that arises from tension and fear. Some of the common symptoms of this disorder include thumb sucking, nail biting, air swallowing, body knocking and many more. Whether these habits should be considered a disorder or not, depends on the frequency of these activities in a child. Such habits that initially start as intentional moves soon becomes permanent and a customary character of the child.
There are infact thousands of such disorders that a child may suffer from. While most disorders are easily curable depending on the environment, but the attachment disorders often become more complex with time. Complexities arising from lack of proper attachment during the tender years can only be overcome with constant care, proper scrutiny of the child’s behavior, proper parenting and physical security.
