The Urdu popular fiction is blessed to have writers like Umera Ahmed. In Pakistan, the penetration of the popular fiction among the masses is not much. Nevertheless, it is not less either. Especially the Urdu popular fiction extends beyond the urban population. Of course, the English popular fiction is read among the city dwellers only.
Umera Ahmed started her writing career from the popular fiction digests. The digests in which she contributed a lot are the Khawateen Digest and the Shua Digest, both belonging to the same group of publishers. She also wrote a few Urdu stories and novels for Pakeezah digest.
An interesting fact about Umera Ahmed is that she has done masters in English literature. Yet she chose to write stories and novels in Urdu. There can be several reason of why Umera chose to write in Urdu. A simple reason is that Umera Ahmed has always wanted to reach the masses through her writings and in Pakistan, reaching the masses is possible only if it is done by choosing the Urdu language as the medium.
Umera Ahmed has touched different topics while writing in the Urdu language. The topic of her initial novels was the self-esteem of the women of Pakistan. She especially wrote about the self-esteem of the women who are not very much physically endowed and often considered ugly by the society. She urged the plain looking women to develop their personality and careers in a way that the looks become a secondary thing not only to them but also to the people around them.
After writing about the self-esteem of the women for a while, Umera Ahmed started to write Urdu stories and novels on Pakistan’s bureaucracy. One of her very famous Urdu novels on Pakistan’s bureaucracy is called ‘Amer Bail’.
Umera Ahmed is also known for another distinguished style of writing. She wrote a lot of novels on the religious topics in Urdu. Umera’s writings on the religious topics are distinctive because of many reasons. Her style is not preachy at all. She has proper storylines and character building, unlike many other writers who produce Urdu religious stories.
Although there are many novels of Umera Ahmed, which became bestsellers, however some novels of her broke all the records. For example Peer-e-Kamil (s.a.w), Meri Zaat Zara e Benishan, Man-o-Salwa etc. The most famous of Umera’s novel among these is the Peer-e-Kamil (s.a.w).
After producing a lot of extremely popular Urdu novels and stories for the digests, Umera Ahmed proceeded to write for the TV. She has written stories and scripts for countless TV drama serials and short plays now. Due to her engagements at TV, Umera has stopped writing for the digest, although the digest audience still misses her and craves for her writings. Another reason people say that Umera left writing for the Urdu digests is because after reading the Peer-e-Kamil, people’s expectations from Umera became too high. So instead of writing in pressure, Umera stepped ahead to write for an entirely different audience.
